It's that time again for Media Create chart results from Japan, and this week's numbers have an air of predictability about them; that's good news for both Nintendo and Capcom.
The launch of Monster Hunter X (Cross) has brought nearly 1.5 million sales for the title - with Famitsu having a number slightly above that - making it one of the biggest 3DS game launches in the country, in the same ball-park as the likes of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. It's another major success for Capcom, with the new entry introducing a fresh blend of action gameplay into the conventional fare. These numbers include download cards sold at retail but not direct eShop sales, so the actual sales will naturally be higher.
Elsewhere Aikatsu! My No. 1 Stage! is a 3DS newcomer at number two, while Splatoon and Super Mario Maker seal third and fourth place respectively, rounding out a strong week for games on Nintendo systems. The top 20 is below, with lifetime sales in brackets.

- [PSV] Omega Labyrinth (D3 Publisher, 11/19/15) – 5,623 (30,736)
Capcom's monster hit has also brought a huge boost to New 3DS hardware sales; there has been a handsome red New 3DS LL (XL) model in addition to a standard New 3DS with some special kisekae cover plates. Wii U also enjoyed a boost to bring it closer to the PS4; results below have last week's sales in brackets.
- New 3DS LL – 105,629 (28,257)
- PlayStation 4 – 26,598 (29,052)
- Wii U – 20,256 (14,684)
- New 3DS – 18,052 (5,859)
- PlayStation Vita – 14,765 (12,258)
- 3DS – 6,095 (1,012)
- PlayStation 3 – 1,643 (1,624)
- 3DS LL – 1,247 (596)
- PlayStation Vita TV – 625 (583)
- Xbox One – 591 (889)
A terrific week for Capcom, then, with Nintendo no doubt happy to see such a sizeable number of New 3DS systems sold. Whether Monster Hunter X (Cross) will be localised for the West will be interesting to see.

Look at Splatoon still splating away. Can't see how it won't hit a Million over in Japan.
Now Monster Hunter is an all together different beast over there. Should hit 3 million at some point.
105K New 3DS in a week........bleepity bleep bleep bleep
1.5 mill straight off the bat!? Wow Nintendo have a heck of a job to do in the west, particularly with 3rd parties, but in Japan it's an altogether different story. With their exclusives combined with having Monster Hunter and Yokai-Watch exclusive it's almost unfair.
If memory serves me right, sales in Japan see a decent boost over the last 3 or 4 weeks of the year which would be starting about next week. If that is the case, and Nintendo just sold 130K 3DS systems in a week...they maybe in for a great December for Japanese sales.
@Gerbwmu you took the words outta my mouth, LoL . Even the Wii U seems to be picking up some steam these days which is good to hear the Wii U is such an underrated system it deserves to capture some success the Wii U is easily the most played system at my house there are some amazing titles available now and my new 3DS XL is hands down my all time favorite system to date I play on mine daily .
Wii U games holding the 3+4 spots is the biggest news to me. 4 in the top 20 is nice as well. If Wii U actually got Minecraft that would likely be in the Top 20 every week as well. Siily rumour.
So what are there more games of - Yokai Watch or Taiko Drum Master? They both never end.
@JaxonH - You import that new 3DS LL yet? It's kick... (Though I'm biased, I prefer everything red.) I was afraid TW might give you a heart attack w/ that "Whether..." comment a the end.
At this point in the series Monster Hunter should be released simultaneously on a global scale like Pokemon X and Y was , I can't wait to get MH X looks amazing .
well if it wasn't obvious before now it is. Monster hunter cross is coming to U.S. They have absolutely nothing to loose.
Monster hunter is such a strong beast!
It's still less than the sales of MH4 and MH3, just saying xD
But DAMN NICE ANYWAYS MAN
Wow, look at that gap between 1 and 2 in software. No wonder MH is like the only game Capcom will give to Nintendo systems.
And I will be that guy. Amiibo Festival in the top 20!
Good to see the Wii U increase. That 3DS increase is killer though...
@ChromXsome
While this is true, the numbers are really good looking at how everything has been doing overall these last few weeks.
Bring that sexy red XL over here Capcom/Nintendo and I'll buy it day one. I don't care that I own multiple 3DS's, that red is gorgeous. XD
@Gerbwmu
LOL IKR!
Superb week for Capcom and Nintendo. What a beast MHX is, the next one capable of this feat will probably be YW3 I guess, except Nintendo surprise us with another Pokemon mainline entry before that. Wii U got a holiday boost and Splatoon still performing very-very well. Who would expect a 6-months old game still selling better than SMM every single week?
Is there any statement on whehter they will bring out MHX to the West (Europe especially, as I know they will bring it out in America if anywhere!)
130,000 total 3DS's sold in one week in Japan, and right, Nintendo is "in trouble", lol.
3DS is steamrolling everything!
I want Nintendo NX being a new handheld bundled with MHX looking just like this 3ds released summer 2016
Just wondering is it worth buying MH4U now? Let's say from eshop for 44.99euro? Or wait for some sale?
@iaLgan
Monster Hunter X is a different game with different mechanics than Monster Hunter 4U.
Both games are two very different beasts.
Though NeoGaf says this would have sold better on mobile.
If all goes right, 3DS will pass the 20M mark in Japan by year's end.
All of MH games starting from psp till now are +- the same but i don't want to argue about that Long time ago played MHF and than MHFU tried MHU3 than MHU4 demo everything is the same except minor details. Ofcourse monster weapons etc but that's a given for a sequel. People still play online ?
Good numbers, with even the Vita almost able to see 20,000. Not too shabby.
But poor Xbox, though. It really is a lovely system. Anyone who says the Wii U or Vita have failed in a market needs to be reminded of these sub-1000 numbers.
@iaLgan I bought mh4u on release date and played maybe 15-20 hours and then switched to majora's mask. Didn't touch it since month ago.. And now I'm hooked like fly on stuff 200 hours in. And yes, people still playing online. Btw I think there was a sale on eshop few days ago..
@Spoony_Tech it's a shame Mario and luigi is going to flop next week. Next big title in Japan for Nintendo should be monster strike on the 3ds in a couple of weeks.
@CroRock yeah i know it's a great game loved all MH titles just needed to know if people still play online. And there was a sale in US not in Europe was hoping for it oh well will try amazon maybe if not will take one from eshop for full price.
Does anyone know any details about Nintendo and Capcom's deal with Monster Hunter? Why is it only on 3DS at the moment? Not that I'm complaining.
@Moon it's kind of strange, monster hunter went from a ps2 exclusive to a psp exclusive to a wii and wiiU game to a 3ds exclusive. I would love it if monster hunter 4 would be available on wiiU, ps4 and psvita.
@Moon biggest instal base and sd development makes it cheaper and more lucrative to develop. That's my guess.
@darkswabber when the 3ds kicks the bucket I think it will move to ps4 and nx. Just a hunch
@darkswabber when the 3ds kicks the bucket I think it will move to ps4 and nx. Just a hunch
@darkswabber
Nintendo has an exclusive agreement with Capcom, where Nintendo publishes, distributes and markets the game in the West.
Nintendo also helps localize the games and pay for development.
Sony didn't care enough to support the franchise in the West, because they didn't think it would sell.
Monster Hunter series has sold more on Wii with MH3 than the whole of the PS2 games and PS3 games Wii U MH3U has outsold the the PS2 versions and PS3 games combined too.
3DS games have sold more than the PSP games.
This why Monster Hunter will remain on NX for the foreseeable future
Mother (4) of God, those sales are wonderful. I'm almost incredulous. What helped Wii U this week?
@GLA
new holiday bundles and Splatoon slowly gaining steam.
@dumedum It's Wii U that is in trouble. Monster Hunter is like the Call of Duty of Japan, and it's on the 3DS' best region (Japan), so no surprise that Nintendo handhelds dominate again.
@Xenocity NeoGaffe doesn't have a grip on reality anymore. I wonder, how is anyone supposed to play Monster Hunter comfortably without at least one physical analog stick, if not two, along with at least two shoulder buttons and some kind of action feedback? (The clumsy graft on controllers for mobile don't count.)
@darkswabber Snatching Monster Hunter from Sony is one of the greatest coups Nintendo has ever made. Most of my Monster Hunter time was spent on PS2, so I understand how Sony botched their previous exclusivity. They paid too much heed to professional western reviewers and retailers during the mid-late 00's, who initially were incredibly poor judges of the series, believing it to be mediocre. Sony hoisted the bills for the free (for the players) online servers upon Capcom, and parted with the series prematurely. Sony incorrectly predicted that Capcom had squeezed everything possible out of the series after MH Unite, thinking the PSP oversaturated the market with action RPG sorts of titles.
@faint NX yes, PS4 no. There's no way Nintendo wouldn't butter up Capcom to keep an exclusive trump card on hand. Sony gave up Monster Hunter once, and they're not getting it back so easily, now that it's more popular than it ever was on their systems.
@PlywoodStick
NeoGaf maybe be out of "touch" with reality, but they are still the nexus of "hardcore" gaming and they are still taken seriously by the media and gaming companies.
NeoGaf is as much of gospel in the industry as NPD and EEDAR (you know the sales tracking and data agencies which define everything gaming related) .
Sony really didn't think Monster Hunter was worth funding because it didn't sell well on PS2 and in the West.
@faint Well you called the Monster Hunter one last week but I still feel Paper Jam will do well enough. It at the very least should do over 100k. Hopefully by the end it's over 500k.
@Spoony_Tech I also called splatoon a week before it launched. I think m&l will do sub 100,000. It's probably going to be between 40 and 60. Now monster stike will definitely break 100,000. It's to soon to be 100 percent but it should break 200,000
@PlywoodStick monster hunter is one of the few things keeping capcom alive. It will be the choice of the monster hunter team. Not Nintendo, Sony, or Capcom. It's also the smart thing to do if they want to grow. I doubt they will leave ninty tho. Also no chance in hell they will work with Microsoft
Damn, that's a lot of sales!
@iaLgan Where are you? On ebay uk you can get it for about £20.
@andrea987 Im from Lithuania so i have problems with getting games that i want Only orders from amazon ebay etc and ofcourse eshop that way it's faster but not allways cheaper plus no physical copy if it's from eshop.
I'm actually planning to skip this one. With Xenoblade coming and Final Fantasy Explorers I'm planning to play those a good longtime. But I wouldn't be surprised if this Monster Hunter is about the same as the others. After years of trying to like Monster Hunter I'm moving on. I just don't get it.
