Modding within the Super Smash Bros. community isn't anything new, for fans have been creating an array of in-game tweaks for years now - such as altering physics engines or reskinning characters as a whole. The most notable of the bunch is 'Project M'; this is a mod of Nintendo Wii's Super Smash Bros. Brawl that focused the game to play more like its predecessors, as well as bringing in a slew of returning and new characters.
With that said, a group of dedicated fans are currently working on a mod to bring Dragon Ball Z's Goku to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. From the happenings of the great internet, Goku seemed to be a hot fan favourite in 2015's Smash Fighter Ballot (although this writer personally feels there are more deserving characters than the Kamehameha master), and modder KevintheH is making this an unofficial reality. He has replaced Ryu's character model with that of Goku's, while Super Mega Buster 123 Win64 Gigabyte and Nanobuds cleaned it up with more polished textures. ShadowLuigi_NG has breathed further life into the character via voice packs.
Check out the video below and let us know your thoughts. It should be noted that the mod is currently in its beta stage and is not yet finished, plus it's technically naughty. Maybe we should look but not play.

I wish people would just stop with the Goku in Smash nonsense already...
Go Goku!
Neat mod—I wasn't aware there was a mod community surrounding Smash4.
It ain't Goku unless he could float in the air, teleport at will, transforms to Super Saiyan, burst into Kaioken, and be able to unleash the Spirit Bomb.
@Detective_TeeJay why do you say that? Smash bros is a great platform for crossovers and given the nature of the anime it would make go well with the game too. Like chocolate and peanutbutter my friend.
@Rafx No anime characters. I won't argue this further or make any further replies. This argument has already been done to death already. Goodbye.
We are getting ever so closer to the crazy **** that people are able to pull off in Brawl...I am excited.
@Detective_TeeJay: Amen to that.
@Detective_TeeJay
But the game is full of anime characters already. Like, for example, the entire Fire Emblem cast. The Xenoblade guys too.
@GeminiSaint It's not the same thing. While, yes, those characters do fit those styles, they are still strictly videogame characters and have debuted as such. Goku is not. He has had videogames, yes, but he did not debut in a videogame, and is strictly an anime character.
I wanted Goku in it. Kid Goku from Dragon Ball, before he got OP. Haha. Ah well, pretty cool mod regardless, I don't think I'll play it just cause it might be like salt on a wound for me.

There are mods to do all this too in the 3DS version as well...it's just that no one has made Goku yet, and thus, there wouldn't be as much clickbait, eh?
@Detective_TeeJay Let's be real for a sec the game basically has a bunch of anime styled characters, don't see how one more tips the scale.
Huh... Neat.
Why are people complaining about this? It's just a mod. Besides, aren't there anime-swordfighters already in the game?
@retro_player_22 nice SSF2 reference!
Apparently "Video game characters only" is too much of a complex concept to grasp for the more stubborn DB fans.
I kinda want this to be a reality so we can have an anime character that isnt a swordfighter
I wonder if they'll add in his ALT costumes from various sagas. Like the Saiyan suit and the outfit he wore at the end of Dragonball GT.
Honestly I'd prefer Knuckle Joe over Goku, cute little guy, at least he's an assist trophy.
It's just a reskin of Ryu -_- you can't fool me
@Senpai_Bruh fire emblem is far from an "anime" and if you're also refering to cloud, also false
@Detective_TeeJay No argument here, was genuinely curious why you took such a strog stance on it and you know what the point you have makes perfect since. Think you may have changed my mind.
I hadn't thought of it that way.
Have a good day buddy.
Whoa, didn't know the people who want Goku in Smash really exist, I thought they were an urban legend 😜
But really, joking aside, before reading comments here I would've never thought there is such a strong stance in favor of "Goku for SSB". Seriously guys, why would you want him in the first place?
Why should he be in? He doesn't have the slightest connection the Nintendo/gaming universe. Letting him in would justify letting Shrek in, too.
It's just Ryu...
all it is a they placed a Goku model over Ryu's build. It looks like it works nicely. All they need are better voice clips and character portraits.
@Zoda_Fett Don't worry. I was being sarcastic. I've actually played Final Fantasy and Fire Emblem. I was just joking about how Goku could be in Smash.
I hope Nintendo makes this a reality instead of just the same old cease and desist order.
Although I know that it will never happen, I think Goku would be a great choice as a character for SSB, but other characters would be better. I'm still hoping (but not expecting) Mark Evans
/ Endou Mamoru as a character.
Came in expecting to be disappointed. Lived up to my expectations.
@Senpai_Bruh oh haha, my apologies. Both of them are great series. I don't really have objections with goku in but I'd much rather see someone else third party that deserves it a little more in an official game. Like shovel knight or Quote, and I hate to admit it but rayman.
I got to give them some credit since it beats them just complaining that Goku should be in Smash.
Can't wait for custom music.
It's nice to tailor the game's music with the ones you like.
@Gridatttack Do I have news for you!
This looks cool.
Why do people want him in Smash so much? I never understood the appeal of anime in general but I guess that's just me.
Someone gets the Ice Climbers modded into the game and then I'll be paying attention.
While I'm a huge DBZ fan, this would never happen as he didn't originate as a video game character, and I'm fine with that.
Though, hypothetically (in an alternate universe) if it did happen, Kid Goku would make much more sense for a variety of reasons (though I know the prospect probably doesn't sound too exciting for those who want him in).
Shrek should be in Smash too. He's a very famous character, right up there with Mario and PAC-MAN. He would fit very well in the game's art style, and has appeared in dozens of games, a bunch of which turned out to be successful. We need to get him modded in this game, but more importantly, get him in the next Smash!
@Detective_TeeJay oh common dude ease up. This is a fun little mod
@NintendoFan64 @Jazzer94 That's neat, but I'm too afraid of having my Wii U bricked to attempt modding it.
@CapeSmash I have to disagree. If we're going into the film/cartoon territory, the likes of Mickey Mouse etc. are way better candidates than Shrek due to their pioneer status within the industry. But I still firmly believe none of them deserve a spot on the roster, due to, you know, them not being video game characters and all.
@Captain_Gonru I hadn't watched this, not a huge "Fan mod" guy, but watching it now, yeah, Goku in SSB would be cool, I'd even be willing to pay the ridiculous $6 per character price. (My kid is still bugging me for Bayonetta but man they add up) Goku amiibo would be day 1. An dif they oculd make him go supersaiyan when touching him to the Gmaepad, even better.
So for now we just buy Pop figures, but I know someday somebody is going to make a DBZ toys-to-life game, just too many figures to be sold not too.
@GeminiSaint By that logic, everyone buy Diddy Kong is an anime charactet
@Rafx In gaming. You want a crossover with Japanese story characters then play J-Stars or fighting climax
@Jazzer94 because they aren't anime characters. they are game characters in jrpgs
@Senpai_Bruh No. because they aren't from anime
@DBPirate Anime is more of a medium than a genre. So in other words, what you may be interested in the west you can find in anime.
Doyou like Quentin Tarantino films? Well then Baccano and Durarara might be for you.
Intense action with a hidden meaning? Look up Gurren Lagaan or Kill la Kill.
Do you want a comedy that's actually so crazy that it looks like it lost its God damn mind for once? Look up Haruhi Suzumiya, Excel Saga or Nichijo.
Or do you want something that is outright bizzare? Look up Phantom World, FLCL or any JoJo's Bizarre Adventure act.
@Detective_TeeJay "No anime characters in smash ever. Why? Because I say so. I don't have to explain crap to you."
@SamirMalik You do know I was kidding right?
@rjejr I don't understand why Gokus eyes are green. Shouldn't they blue. Don't know why this is bugging me so much.
@Rafx Zombie Goku? Yeah, I don't know why, it's bothering me too. We dont own that one.
@Captain_Gonru Man, that Playmation thing is awful. I don't understand how it's still on the Target shelf talking to me every time I'm in there. And I still haven't put my hand on the scanner to see whether I'm friend or foe. And if they can't get a big geek kid like me interested in Marvel toys, they are doing something very very wrong. And all the toys look like garbage too. Like somebody went back and looked at all of our cool "Action figures" from the 70's and made really bad cheap plastic versions of them. I just don't get it. The sooner it goes the better, I don't think 1 toy has moved since they set that display up 6 moths ago.
Not sure about the NFC chips in baseball cards games. I can see the cards for collectors and a mobile app library for keeping track of them - you know, like the kind of app Wii U should have for out amiibo - but I don't see the game happening. Not sure why. Too many trades, players don't stand out. Just don't see it.
That TMNT game looked horrible when I Saw i tbaout a year ago, I know there are a few others but you are right, all of those dedicated games are garbage. I have the Lord of the Rings one and the only thing that makes it cool is swinging the sword around. Game is still crap though. I got it on clearance for a couple of $ somewhere years ago, maybe a Kmart closing.
And I don't think we're off topic. Not for us.
@FlowOfDough Because Nintendo has made it abundantly clear for the last 15 years that only characters who have originated in video games are eligible to appear in Super Smash Bros.
Period.
This argument has gone on for far too long, and people like Detective TeeJay and myself are sick and tired of having to beat this dead horse by repeatedly trying to explain such a simple concept to stubborn, thick-skulled morons.
So there, I just "explained crap to you". Happy?
Cool mod, by the way.
@Seanmyster6 Judging from the way you talk, you could probably do without explaining it to anyone else.
Ugh. Just go play mugen already. That is a broken mess full of wish fulfillment. Leave Smash alone.
