One of the most beloved entries in the Pokémon series is finally making its way to the Wii U Virtual Console this week.
Originally intended for the 64DD add-on, Pokémon Snap launched in 1999 (2000 in Europe) on the Nintendo 64 and for many fans presented the first look at Pocket Monsters in 3D. The game plays like an on-rails shooter, with the objective being to photograph as many different Pokémon types as possible.
So far this has only been confirmed for Europe this week, but we'd assume that a North American release is very probable. Pokémon Snap was previously released on the Wii Virtual Console in 2007.
Will you be investing in this one? Let us know with a comment.

Day one
... Well, looks like I need to add some credit to my eshop account.
(The lack of a gamepad-focused new Pokemon Snap game is one of the biggest travesties of the Wii U. It was the perfect console for it.)
I loved Snap, still own the cart. I really wish they would have made a sequel for Wii U, as the gamepad would have been perfect for a camera.
I guess EuroGamers "leak" could also work for a Snap sequel, move the screen around to move the camera and if it's a touch screen you wouldn't even need the buttons, but I think Go probably kills any chance of this ever happening.
The original Pokémon GO
Unless that Pikachu pedometer came out first in which case I guess that's the original Pokémon GO haha.
Great game though. Can definitely recommend. Actually, adding Pokémon Snap mechanics into GO could be a fun idea - photograph a Pokémon in its attack or jump animation for a small Exp bonus.
Day never. NOE are late this morning with this weeks European downloads press release.
Obligatory "Oh snap!" comment
I have the N64 cartridge and Wii VC version so I'll skip it. If they ever decide to make a new one, I'll be buying it day one.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE you don't have the first comment...so who here is late?
Since the Wii VC version let us post photos to the Wii message board (and send them on to friends), chances this version will have similar Miiverse support?
@gaga64 It does by default like every other VC game.
@manu0 It's Pukemon, not exactly riveting. I'm more concerned about this weeks downloads. Nintendo UK tweeted this out first thing this morning which is unusual I think. The Press release is an hour and a half late. Maybe we're not getting one, but why?
It could be that Pukemon Crap is all they've got. Most weeks are awful anyway and lead to a backlash. Look at last week, we got some rubbish games, Super Paper Mario and discounted eShop games. Those discounts run until August 25th so that's this week covered.
Or.......dun.......dun.......dun.......Nintendo Direct incoming?
This was always one of my favorite Nintendo 64 games when I was younger, so I might pick this up when it hits North America. I would love to see a sequel to this but I'm not sure how likely that is.
So far this has only been confirmed for Europe this week, but we'd assume that a North American release is very probable.
I was never really interested in this game, to be honest, because I thought it looked little too slow-paced for my taste. Still, I might consider buying it if they release it in America, though I highly doubt they will until maybe a couple of months.
@allav866
^^^^^ THIS
@Angelic_Lapras_King oh yeah, duh me
I missed out on the N64 at the time, but have always been a Pokemon fan, so snapped up the Wii e-shop version of this as soon as it was released... but I won't bother buying another version when I can just switch my WiiU into Wii mode in order to play it.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE A few more games has been confirmed for release one way or the other, and I decided to put up the list on a Danish website with the ones we know so far. You can find that via the link below, and 7,50 kr. (we use , as decimal seperator) equals 1 €:

I loved this game. The only non violent on rails shooter I can think of. High times O.<
Please Nintendo can you give us more expensive virtual console games we bought for the wii but need to again for the wii u. Please can you support the virtual console more than the actual wii u itself. Please can you make the games more expensive. Thanks we all love throwing money at you.
Ps please can you make us buy super Mario brothers again for the Nintendo NX.
Crap, I was afraid it was juat for Europe even when just seeing the title. Who knows if we will ever see it. For whatever stupid reasons we still don't even have MK64 on the eShop.
@Ikramali
Are you insulting Nintendo ?
What do you expect then ?
Just put it into my veins!!!
Hope it comes to NA someday.... If it comes, I'll get it day one.
NA is so behind on Wii U VC releases... Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64, Zelda Majora's Mask, Zelda Spirit Tracks, Animal Crossing, Kirby Canvas Curse and now Pokemon Snap.
@Anti-Matter I expect better but I guess everyone loves paying more
Are there any VC games that NA has but Europe doesn't or is it just one way?
@OorWullie I am sure I speak for all Europeans when I say "SHHHH YOU'LL JINX IT!".
Nintendo should have released a sequel to this for the Wii U on day one. Pokemon sells units: that's why the 3DS is still strong!
I've never been so mad at the fact that NA and Europe don't have a unified eshop for a long time. BRING POKEMON SNAP TO NA NINTENDO!!!
@GrailUK Haha I think that answers my question.
Been waiting for this one since the Game pad was first shown off so it could be used as a camera in a sequel. I'm guessing it's a little late now for that though.
Still, if they wanted to make Pokémon Snap 2, or amiibo Snap, or Pokémon Snap 2 that let's you add in your amiibo to the game, well it's not like the Wii U holiday schedule is over loaded with games this year.
This and a sequel would have made a nice ND @Grumblevolcano
@aaronsullivan long overdue, huh. I feel like 1 of us has mentioned this game every week for ever.
How about making a 3ds version using gyro abilities?
@rjejr Yeah, it was a huge missed opportunity. But it is long gone at this point. Maybe a sequel is entering development for the NX. Nintendo must be starting publishing efforts on many Pokemon spinoffs with renewed budgeting right? We have it on the Wii VC, so maybe we'll play it today.
I was just commenting with my family how Pokemon at amusement parks would be so easy to get great results. You could make a ride exactly like Pokemon snap but using real cameras and even get them to rate your photos automatically at the end. But even simpler, you could just hide little pokemon statues all over the park and we'd be skipping around like giddy school kids.
Anyway, we are loving Pokemon GO lately. My wife is ahead of all of us. We are driving more than walking but it's cooling off again and there are some parks we want to hit.
@InternetBowser Would be so great, but this is a VC so there's really no chance of it happening.
It looks cool, but I've already got enough to play so I'll probably give this a miss.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE It's a German bank holiday today. I'm guessing the eshop update will be out tomorrow.
All I want is Secret of Mana and FF6 on VC before the Wii U dies...
Nice, another game to be upgraded from Wii VC! How about Smash or F-Zero X next? Or surprise us with WiiWare for Wii U like Megaman 9 and 10?
@aaronsullivan Well I hope something is in development on NX. Hardware is supposed to launch in 7 months but so far the only games we know are Zelda and Just Dance, that's not much of a lineup. I'm sure they want to show off the hardware before the software, but hopefully somebody at Nintendo HQ has said - "hey guys, how do we get people excited for games if we don't tell them what they are?" At this point they need to show off NX just so they can start marketing the games, hardware who cares?
I will probably get it if it comes out in North America since I have never played it, but I always thought that it looked fun.
@Bluecup There should be no excuse. These press releases are written a couple of weeks in advance.
This is the best experience featuring Pokemon. The one criticism I have is that it's a little light on content - but it has loads of replay value - just for the pure fun of it!
@Bluecup It's only a bank holiday in two states though and Nintendo is not located in those.
Great! I love the this game. I hope it will be be US version...
This it for eshop this week?
If it does come to NA this week I can get it at a discount.
I'll be very surprised if this comes to NA this week. They're usually a few weeks/months behind Europe on the VC front.
That said, I'll snap this up on day 1!
YES! Now for America! FOR THE SEQUEL!!!
I'm legitimately surprised by the nostalgia factor this game has. I found the difficulty curve totally haphazard - either a pokemon was right out in the open or you had to do some absurd sequence of events that required either a guide or complete guesswork to get an evolved version of a 'mon to appear - and it was crazy short.
I remember getting the pic of Mew (uh, 17 year old game spoilers?) the weekend we bought the game and it was just... over. The premise was good, but it could have used another 50+ pokemon, and an actual sensible progression.
@invictus4000 I have Secret of Mana on Nintendo Wii and I could upgrade it for Nintendo Wii U, but not while save data gets erased in the process...
Nintendo should have thought that one through more...
When it comes out in NA, I'll get it on day one! And then I'll play it and take lots of pictures! And THEN...I'll take my memory card and go down to my local Blockbuster, pop it into the Pokemon Snap kiosk and print out all of my lovely STICKERS!
Wait...what? No sticker kiosks? But that was the very best part about this game?!? Drat.
What would be awesome is if the VC release on Wii U supported the GamePad's gyroscope. Being able to move the GamePad in real time instead of having to move a joystick. I mean if Nintendo was able to configure the Wii U VC release of Duck Hunt to support the sensor bar, this also seems in the realm of possibility. Make it happen Nintendo!
@Hokanchu On the Wii VC version of this game you could save your pics to the console. Would be cool if you could do the same with this release or post them to Miiverse.
I'd be happy to have a reason to play through Secret of Mana again from the beginning. It's such am amazing timeless classic.
Where is the download update today?
Oak: Wonderful!
@EllenJMiller Yeah, it's such an obvious way to use the gamepad and Nintendo didn't bother with it. Why Nintendo, why?
Has anyone else noticed how N64 games on VC can be a bit difficult to control due with the analogue sticks being different to how they were years ago?
Where is the download update today?
On Thursday. This is just telling us in advance that it will come later in the week.
@TruenoGT I like your choice of games, Hybrid Heaven was such a unique RPG, there's nothing like it. I loved the feeling of isolation in Castlevania 64 and F-Zero X - YES PLEASE!
@rjejr Don't forget Sonic 2017 and Dragon Quest 10 are coming to NX as well. Though ironically we have 3 times as many 3rd party NX games as first party, and something like a snap sequel will help
@Alundra-1998 How can you upgrade it to Wii U? I know its on the Wii VC but I heard all the old Wii VC titles are kinda clunky. Are there any drawbacks if I bought it through the Wii Channel?
new rumor ..the NX will probably have Pokémon Snap-on controllers..lol..
@invictus4000 I think you get a special price on the Nintendo Wii U eShop if you own the game on the Nintendo Wii eShop.
I can't completely remember as I found it out ages and never used it because your game saves from your Nintendo Wii get deleted in the process.
I think you get a special price on the Nintendo Wii U eShop if you own the game on the Nintendo Wii eShop.
I call it an "early download penalty tax", because thats what it is. For NES games in the UK for example, its £3.49 on the Wii U or £4.49 if you've downloaded it on Wii and upgrade. Nothing special about it.
I found it out ages and never used it because your game saves from your Nintendo Wii get deleted in the process.
The benefits of playing VC games on the Wii U despite the penalty tax greatly outnumber the benefts of playing on Wii. Why play the original Wii console? And transferring data to Wii U doesn't delete the save data from Wii mode, even after upgrading.
@ap0001 Here's the thing: you could get take the pictures and call it day. But it challenged you to take better ones and beat your scores. That's where the depth and challenge, IMO, came in. I can only imagine how deep they can go now with more regions and Pokemon at their disposal
I never imagined myself liking this game until I played it then instantly fell in love with it, will definitely be getting this in the hopes it pushes Nintendo to look into a sequel
@ASonic3582 "Though ironically we have 3 times as many 3rd party NX games as first party"
So much hype, rumours and leaks for a console that has no games.
I'd much rather see screenshots of games than patent applications.
Oh man, now if only it used the gamepad to aim like the Google Maps demo
Still waiting for this in NA. How long is it gonna take?
@FTPinkRabbit
I'm thinking the same thing. It makes no sense NOT to have it available on the american eShop.
Never got to play this game. Is it really that good?
Very cool!
@Nintendude678
It's not the best side game, but it's definitely fun in short bursts.
