Good old Dylan Cuthbert. He's gone on to bring so many video game delights to the world with Q-Games, but whenever he gets a chance to tweet about the original Super Nintendo Star Fox - a game he was the lead coder of - he jumps on it.
It's hard to believe it's been a quarter of a century since its release, and now this humble scribe feels super-old. While lucky Japanese gamers would get the Super FX-powered classic on 21st February 1993, North America would wait until 26th March 1993 and Europe would later get the game on 3rd June 1993 under the new moniker, Star Wing. Still, this was quite a rapid turnaround for Nintendo in the early '90s!
The original Star Fox was a fantastic game and a real technical achievement for its day. Be sure to share your memories of this wonderful game with a comment below.

Looks like I will be booting up the SNES Mini Classic tonight
Whereas games like ALTTP and Super Metroid have aged gracefully and look as good today as back then, Star Fox shows every one of its 25 years. It and Star Fox 2 are two games I've absolutely no interest in playing on the SNES Classic Mini.
Quick, everybody get in here and slate Zero!
Fingers crossed Nintendo use this as an excuse to do something with the franchise, but after how Zero performed in terms of sales it doesn't seem likely
@gcunit I wasn't going to say it but yes Star Fox Zero is a steaming pile of crap. Lazy effort with broken controls. Nobody will be remembering it in 25 years unless in a bad way.
Bought it in '93 during my first visit to the US (I'm from Brazil). Great game, brilliant music and atmosphere. The original is the only one in the series I actually enjoyed.
Never owned this as a kid, but played it to death at a few friends houses in the 90's. Have it on the classic snes mini now and it was fun to relive those memories. Dated? Definitely. But still fun for me at least.
Star Fox Zero may not be a masterpiece, but I played all the way through it and thought it was a fun game. The controls take a little bit of getting use to but once I did I had no problem piloting my ship and blasting enemies.
I loved this back in the day. I still enjoy it now, especially after the more recent rubbish efforts. I'll never forget the Corneria theme tune. I also loved the 3 different routes, and how they differed but you could jump between them via the secret black hole. I don't think I ever completed the hard route, could never get into Venom.
Lylat Wars remains the best in the series.
Did you know Barrel Roll doesn't actually mean what you think it does? What you think of as the barrel roll is actually the aileron roll. StarFox lied to us for 25 years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrel_roll
Still a fun game tho. I played many hours on the SNES and N64 version.
Great Game and don't think I have ever finished it, haven't really gelled with StarFox 2 but its nice to see it on a console
Wish I could play this again, and Star Fox 2 for the first time, through VC! I still haven't seen a SNES Classic Mini on a store shelf, I'd rather have VC anyway. Oh well.
I didn't really get into the Star Fox games until 64. I remember playing my friends though a little way back when and they were so amazed by it. Messed around with their Super Game Boy also, good times.
@Chaoticwhizz
As I was based in the UK, I got the Starfox or Starwing SNES bundle in 1993 which was a big deal for me. Played that game to death and it's weird, I have replayed it a few times and muscle memory just kicks in.
Star Fox: Assault was what truly immersed me into the world of Nintendo. 7 years later I have every game in the series besides Zero and Command. The Switch reeeally needs a true successor to the 64/Adventures/Assault timeline.
@subpopz
Your avatar melds perfectly with me playing SNES Corneria in the background.
I'm happy I own the game (and Star Fox 2) on my Super Nintendo Classic. But I have to say, the graphics cause me such a headache, they've not aged well. My favourite in this series is still the Starfox 64 3D remake on 3DS (I loved the original game on N64 but the touch-ups to the graphics and voice acting for the 3DS remake put it to the top of the list). I also really like Starfox Command on DS, and for something completely different, I think I might be the only one who truly LOVED Starfox Adventures on GameCube!
It was so loved they made Star Fox 64 a remake of that game and made Star Fox Zero a remake of that!
I remember getting this game in 1993 and putting it into my SNES for the first time. It absolutely blew my 7 year old mind and served as the gateway to me becoming a Star Wars fan.
I still think it has the best soundtrack and overall tone in the entire series, even if the visuals haven't aged particularly well.
@Chaoticwhizz: Actually, yes, I did know. But not everybody does.
@Tank207: Nice avatar! I think I told you that a long time ago.
@Everyone_Else: This games needs to see VC light. I understand Nintendo probably does not want to spend money on acquiring licenses for various titles, but they'd make more money in the long-run. I have yet to play this, & I'm not really interested in purchasing a SNes Mini to play it.
Star Fox is by far the best game in the entire series, and it has aged pretty well IMO. The polygons are crisp, clean and aesthetically pleasing. Judging from all the comments though, it seems I'm pretty much the only one who doesn't find anything wrong with the graphics. I actually prefer them over SF64's textured polygons.
Star Fox 64 isn't bad, but it has nothing on the original masterpiece. One of the best soundtracks ever as well.
I remember getting the cardboard Starwing in my issue of Nintendo Power and being very excited for the game's release. Then I rented it and realized that it was very shallow compared to the X-Wing game I received just the month prior for PC.
It seems like even later it was Rouge Squadron vs. Star Fox and at least for me, Star Wars won. Still it is a fun game that gets a lot of grief now, but back then the thought of 3D graphics on a console was a huge deal.
@DarthFoxMcCloud You're not alone, I loved Star Fox Adventures too, though Assault was my favourite.
@Capt_N I only learned about the barrel roll thing about a month ago. I'm hoping that StarFox comes to virtual console on Switch. Sure you can play it on an emulator but I like the idea of playing in on Nintendo hardware.
@Chaoticwhizz Technically, Peppy could have been asking you to do a full barrel roll. If you flick the control stick enough and spin it could be considered a small barrel roll. Ha.
Also, let's stop harping on Zero. I didn't have any issues with its controls. Might be because I'm an S rank splatoon player, but it really wasn't that bad.
Sich a great game. Absolutely loved it. Have it still for my original snes.
@KillerTan98 Agreed. It gets flak from series die-hards, but StarFox Adventures is by far the most ambitious and layered StarFox experience to date, in my opinion. StarFox Assault to me was a bit lukewarm in comparison, but my family and I still play it today. A successor to the StarFox 64/Adventures/Assault series would be awesome for the series and for the Switch!
The original StarFox for SNES is the best StarFox game ever made, and part of the reason why the SNES was so special.
Unfortunately until the SNES classic, my experience with Star Fox was relegated to the 64 demo in Brawl and some brief time with Command. I've really enjoyed playing Star Fox 1 and 2 though. Sure 1 shows its age a bit but it's just pure old school on rails fun. 2 is great to just boot up and have a 40 minute playthrough. A lot of imagination and technological magic in that game.
@samuelvictor
As in WarioWare: Smooth Moves?
Command doesn’t suck and is the best Star Fox.
It's a shame Nintendo never regards Star Fox's anniversaries... Give us an Arwing Amiibo, or something, Nintendo.
SF64 was my first, and still favorite SF game, and probably one of my favorite Nintendo games period. The first time I used the rumble pack, and hearing characters talk, was a huge deal to me as a kid.
@DrJoson I missed Assault, & have yet to find a copy that doesn't cost an arm & a leg. Really need that GameCube Virtual Console service.
@Chaoticwhizz: Yeah, I'd like it to come to VC. Nintendo needs to be a little more open to purchasing rights to licenses, or at least, the right to host licensed retro games for a limited time.
@DarthFoxMcCloud I know the feeling. Should have picked up Fire Emblem Path of Radiance up back in the day before it practically became a collectors item. That, Adventures and Assault are top of my wish list for GC VC. Hope Nintendo breaks their silence on the VC soon
What better way to celebrate then with a fanfic? Star Fox, Darken Legacy is a nice closure to all the adventures of Star Fox https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12835041/1/Darken-Legacy
