Yacht Club Games has shed more light on Shovel Knight's fourth and final piece of DLC, officially revealing it to be a multiplayer brawler entitled Shovel Knight Showdown.
Shovel Knight Showdown will allow players to duel with up to 4 players, all while scrambling after gems as your favourite heroic or villainous knight. There will be over 16 playable characters including Shovel Knight (obviously), Shield Knight, Black Knight, The Enchantress, and more, with some being playable for the very first time. All those familiar controls and mechanics from the main games return, but placed within a 2D brawler setting.
The game features local-only multiplayer and will arrive as a free update to all existing versions of Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove. It'll also be available as a standalone game directly from the Nintendo eShop, but sadly won't be fighting its way to a release on Nintendo 3DS.
You can compete in one-on-one duels, four-player free-for-alls, co-op battles, and more, and there's also a multi-stage story mode available that is customised for each individual character. You'll be fighting inside various stages inspired by the many characters and places inside the other Shovel Knight games, although there are a few brand new stages to explore as well. You can check out 10 minutes of gameplay in the video below.
While a release date is yet to be confirmed, we do know that Shovel Knight Showdown will be available on Switch and Wii U for $9.99 (or as a free update for Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove owners). Here are a few screenshots for you to enjoy, too.
Are you a Shovel Knight fan? He may not be in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a playable character, but does this make up for that? Let us know your thoughts down below.

Free dlc are the best dlc !!
Yacht Club can do no wrong
What happened to King Of Cards?
That is cool, but what about the amiibos and King of Cards? And physical for switch?
Shovel Knight has guest-starred in so many competition based games (including a small role in Smash of all things) that it's high time he got a competitive multiplayer mode in his own game.
i wasn't excited about this but seeing modes like collect 5 gems to win actually makes this more exciting!
@panthro release date will be announced this week yach club confirmed this
Brilliant!
@megallade even better news!
I've got Shovel Knight for 3DS but look forward to the day I can pick up the entire package as a physical Switch release.
I hope the rest of the Shovel Knight DLC is released before Smash Ultimate.
Next up... Shovel Knight Kart!
So their final DLC is not the King of Cards 30 level campaign we were promised?
This is swell news and all but what happened to the King of Cards DLC? Did they give up on that or is that part of the new package listed here? I’m very confused.
They haven't forgot about King of Cards:

This looks really fun! Should hold me off until smash, can't wait!
I thought yacht club was hemorrhaging money from all this dlc they promised and now they’re giving out more for free? I’m cool if they wanna just make something else instead of more dlc. I would love to buy a Shovel knight 2 or something to keep supporting them and good games
That's pretty cool. Only thing is, I've done my investing and playtime with the 3DS version, so I won't get to experience this, and it's doubtful I double dip. It's fine though, I'd hardly have anyone to play with to get the most enjoyment out of it anyway. Just bring on KoC and I'm all set.
"...but sadly won't be fighting its way to a release on Nintendo 3DS."
This might finally be a reason for me to grab the Switch version. I would have a long time ago except that the 3DS version's 3D effect is amazing.
You mean...I'm soon to get an update to a game I own...on my Wii U?
This is so cool
@Giygas_95 it is, but this game is special. I have it on 3DS, Wii U and Switch and surprisingly, I never regretted that.
@panthro I think it is coming out in December, my reasoning is becasue the Amiibo 3-pack is out then and they did the same thing for the Wii U release and the Shovel Knight Amiibo. Plus they have released all their content on Nintendo thus far exclusively first followed by all other versions.
Wow it's an excellent news!! Glad it will be integrate to Treasure trove! I'll have fun time with it. Shovel knight, Hyper light drifter and Binding of Isaac are the best indie games in my eyes!
Is the story mode also multiplayer or is that where the single player gets to enjoy it?
@Giygas_95 I'll probably double dip finally as well. I had been holding off on doing so since I had the 3ds version but I'll get the switch version too whenever it goes on sale next. Most like will go on sale along with the launch of the new dlc
Freaking love Shovel Knight but I was really excited for those Amiibo and I’m slightly worried about when they and King Knight are coming
Can't wait to see what Yacht Club does next as this finally finishes all the modes promised in Kickstarter. I'm curious to see if they bravely try a new character/world or if they'll be forever tied to Shovel Knight as it has felt like for the past years. Not even sure which I'd prefer, though.
Looks fun, but much more excited to play him in Rivals of Aether.
@Peterjr1 Yacht Club said they're going to announce the release date of King of Cards by this week. With any luck, we'll have all the details, including the Amiibo info, by the week's end. I've been excited to play King of Cards for a long time. I look forward to what Yacht Club will be doing now that they're finishing up their commitments with Shovel Knight.
Wow like all these companies giving free dlc. And all of it genuinely ace. So far I've had free dlc for this, Hollow Knight, piczle lines dx, World Conqueror X, Fast RMX, Slime-San, and Enter the Gungeon. And most, probably all, the free stuff was far superior to stuff I've paid for. And Piczle Lines gave away so much free stuff (literally dozens hours) I bought the sequel day one even though nowhere near completing the original (as it's literally hundreds of hours long). It's almost like (n)indies realise treating gamers with respect will make us buy their stuff ...
@Sakura7 Honestly, I'm wondering the cost to reward ratio of this versus traditional marketing. Any time free DLC comes out, you're going to attract buyers who were on the edge before, get the game back in the public eye to attract new buyers, and build goodwill with existing customers.
Obviously, the model wouldn't work as well with high selling games, but for indies? The ratio of people who'd buy them if they knew about them has to be far higher than major publisher releases.
@link3710 yeah. Wouldn't have touched Piczle Lines with a bargepole normally (looked like Suduko which I despise) and genuinely my most played Switch game. And Enter the Gungeon not reallymy genre but when they did the extra stuff, I was like, fair enough I'll take a punt.
Looks unbalanced as hell, but, do I care? Holy!
It keeps on giving!
I find it so weird that they're still supporting the Wii U. And this is coming from a Wii U owner with a copy of Shovel Knight on it!
I hope they're working on a new game to charge for, I"m a little worried they might burn through all their resources making free add ons.
Man, I am beyond impressed with everything these guys have done.
I have a genuine feeling I'd enjoy playing this more than any Smash game just because of the way I presume the controls and moves are done.
If this is the Final DLC does that mean they are done with Shovel Knight? What's next, a full blown sequel? A new unrelated game?
A cool little extra that I wouldn't mind getting.
@DavidMac
They're adding value to each new sale of the game, helping to keep the game's buzz going, and keep sales at a fair pace. So I don't think they're in any danger just yet.
Minecraft somehow still sells as well. At a single up front payment. And I've been getting every update for eight years for my initial $9.
Its not clear if this is a free download for owners of the vanilla Shovel Knight on Wii U. Says exisitng owners of Treasure Trove get it, but if you bought the OG Shovel Kinght at launch on Wii U all subsequent DLC has been free. Anyone know anything?
So this looks like I’ll enjoy it even more than the campaign. CAN’T WAIT!
@WrongChops Yeah, every launch copy on 3DS and Wii U was upgraded to Treasure Trove edition. So, it's free, just like the rest, I believe.
@RainbowGazelle "every launch copy on 3DS and Wii U was upgraded to Treasure Trove edition"
But it looks like this mode wont' be on 3DS as per the article, which do tend to be wrong a lot of late, so there's hope. I'm hoping it isn't a stand alone $10 game but it is part of the main game, that's all I ask.
@rjejr No, this mode isn't on 3DS. It's coming to all home console versions of Shovel Knight Treasure Trove. It'll also be available to buy separately.
@rjejr
Who would you play against in your 3DS? It’s a party game, your 3DS only has one controller.
@DavidMac SSB and Mario Kart say hi. Though admittedly 8 player SSB only had 4 players on the 3DS version so I guess they'd have to limit SK Showdown to 4 players so they didn't want to do that.
And Kirby Fighters Deluxe.
And Zelda Triforce Heroes.
Wait were you joking? Apologies if you were, past my bedtime.
@RainbowGazelle It'll also be available to buy separately.
Which makes it doubly insulting it isn't coming to the 3DS, as part of the game nor as a stand alone $10 game.
Well at least Switch will get all of the $15 game... for $40.
@rjejr yeah, your argument makes sense if you don’t realize how much extra work p2p multiplayer is. Now don’t get me wrong, if Nintendo wanted to roll their own set of plug and play APIs for connecting online to do multiplayer and have all the match making and what not working for the 3DS, I’d think you had a point.
But if you’ll notice the game doesn’t do online multi player, it does local multiplayer because networked multiplayer is way too much work to expect them to bother with for two consoles that are on their last legs.
But go ahead and be snide, it just makes it clear how little you understand what goes into making the games you take for granted.
@DavidMac You can call it snide, but it's bad optics. At least if they dropped the Wii U version as well that would make sense, but the Wii U is dead, 3DS still has games coming out, even if most of them are ports, it just looks bad. If you want to give them a pass that's your choice, but when I see something that doesn't look right to me I point it out.
At the very least they shoudl have announced 3DS wasn't getting Showdown long before they made this grand big announcement about everything coming out the same day. I don't know, maybe they announced it a year ago that there was a multiplayer aspect of the game coming out that 3Ds wasn't getting and I just missed it, or NL didn't cover it, and if that's the case well ok then, that's fair. But to announce to the world this new mode is coming to the game, everybody should be excited, except for the 3DS owners, they're getting the shaft, well I don't like bad news being sprung on some while good news is being heaped on others. I don't like begin told something is coming out only to be told it isn't coming out for me. It's the Yooka-Laylee release date all over again.
The fact that they even had to go out of their way to explain it to people, getting asked over and over again to explain themselves on twitter, and so many people on here mistakenly thinking the 3DS was getting it, well that should tell you it wasn't handled properly right there.
It’s a mode meant for couch multi player. If 3DS owners were dumb enough to assume that they’d be able to play a four player local multiplayer game on their single player handheld that’s on 3DS owners. This is like getting mad that your iPhone doesn’t support a mouse. There’s no place to plug a mouse in and there’s no reason to have a mouse. Just because you thought something wrong, doesn’t meant they did something wrong.
They’re still putting king of cards on the 3DS and they’re still supporting those installs. They’re just not releasing something that was designed for local multiplayer on a system that doesn’t do local multiplayer without a crap load of extra development work.
Nobody shafted you. You decided to get mad because you don’t have real problems.
So it has a story-mode, so its also for the singleplayers, like me. Good to hear! Sadly this and King of cards are released...on 9 April 2019?! Insane!!
