Causal Bit Games and Hound Picked Games have shared a brand new trailer for Battle Princess Madelyn, revealing that the game will arrive on Switch on 6th December in the process.
Heavily influenced by the likes of Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap, the game follows the story of a young knight in training as she sets off on an adventure to save her kingdom. This one has been on many people's radar for some time now, and we had a blast when we went hands-on with it earlier this month. In our preview, we praised the game for nailing minor details, its pleasing platforming, and its responsive controls.
Christopher Obritsch of Causal Bit Games has said the following:
"It's been an exciting, exhaustive, stressful, enjoyable, frustrating, etc. period over the last two years developing Battle Princess Madelyn and I would do it all over again. The feedback that has been given in the creation of the game, the positive remarks, the way social media, the specialist gaming press, etc. have supported the game throughout this long period has been nothing short of remarkable. The end result is a game the team are all proud of and went beyond what was envisioned. Within a very short time gamers will be able to play Battle Princess Madelyn. I hope it will give them as much enjoyment as it has to the team that created it!"
If you were paying attention to this article's title, or if you're already clued up on your Battle Princess Madelyn knowledge, you'll likely be aware that the game is also coming to Wii U. It's unsurprising that the more modern consoles seem to have been the priority here, but the Wii U version is still on the way and will "follow later in the new year".
Have you been looking forward to getting your hands on this one? Let us know if you'll be buying a copy next month in the comments below.

Oooo, that's some unfortunate timing. This is going on my wishlist though.
I'll be supporting them and buying the Wii U version.
Should they even bother with a wiiu version?
I'm actually looking forward to this more than Smash. Day one!
I'll probably nabb this depending on price
Bit too on the nose this one.
This game is now among my top 25 best indie games of this year for Nintendo Switch alongside The Messenger, Hollow Knight, Celeste, Rogue Legacy, Undertale, Forgotten Anne, Cosmic Star Heroine, Rise and Shine, Inside, Chasm, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, Owlboy, Figment, Debris Infinity, ICEY, Streets of Red, etc.
@Yoshinator Yes cause they also support PS Vita as well. If PS Vita can be alive, so can Wii U.
@Yoshinator Yes, they made a promise. And I respect developers that stick to them. And equally, avoid companies who break promises.
I'm gonna wait for the Wii U version. ^^
@Fake-E-Lee Our game, in story mode, is more akin to a metroidvania - NOT G'NG. Try out the old demo build on Steam to give yourself a bit of an understanding of how BPM plays.
There is an arcade mode that is more like the aforementioned title, though.
Looking forward to this and the final DLC for Shovel Knight on Wii U. Still curious what the other final Wii U title that was hinted at will be, but then there is always the chance that we will see Just Dance 2020 for Wii (and Wii U via vWii) also.
I'm not sure challenging Smash for visibility is a good idea. There was a reason publishers on the PS4 scattered like cockroaches from October when RDR2's release date was unveiled. Same principle should apply here. It won't sell as much as that game (the install base isn't nearly large enough to facilitate those sorts of sales right away), but it'll still be a huge seller.
Alright... alright... sold. See you on the 6th
End of life Wii U is dead. You need to use Switch is better. Of course I have Monster Boy.
@TheGhostWhoWalks I'm double dipping and getting both versions.
Sign me up for the Wii U version. My Wii U gets just as much love as my Switch. Also I refuse to buy Switch versions of games that are on Wii U.
Switch version for me. Hopefully one day it will sit beside a Ghosts'n'Gobins / Maximo compilation. Seem Capcom are well up for resurrecting games
@Yoshinator Actually, it would be the perfect hipster console.
Like others on here, I’m gonna get the Wii-U version. My Wii-U still gets played on occasion since it has collection of eshop/Virtual Console/Wiiware games on it.
I'll be buying the switch version on release.
@retro_player_22 Don't forget about Dead Cells, it is a must for anyone who loves Rogue Legacy. Like honestly I was surprised with how good it is and addictive as all hell.
@subpopz To be fair, GN'G was hard due in part to its floaty jumping mechanics. At least from this trailer, there's a sense that jumping is much more responsive in BPM.
I promised day 1 so day 1.
@subpopz GnG controls work perfectly for what they were trying to achieve. It is just what they wanted to achieve was extracting every quarter in your pocket. That said, it has been proven that with enough practice (or well timed saved states) you too can beat it on a single life.
The same thing applies to other classics like Castlevania and Mega Man. 😊
I'm getting this DAY ONE!!!
Snappp i cant let this down, day 1 for me
Love that this is zoomed in further than most platformers, like Ghosts N Goblins. This game really interests me more than most retro style games, think this may be a day 1 for me.
@subpopz Mega Man was designed by the people who were taught to design games that swallowed quarters. In fact that was generally the method of design through the NES era.
EDIT: And games like Castlevania had their difficulty ramped up outside of Japan to make it less likely the games would enter the secondary market.
The controls on all three are very precise and tight, but it does require you to understand the underlying mechanics of them. GnG is not as easily accessible, but the design and logic are there to be discovered and learned. I am not a fan of GnG for other reasons (my idea of fun isn't intentionally banging my head into a wall over and over again), but those same reasons are why I avoid Mega Man (another game that is essentially about memorization and muscle memory).
@subpopz Almost forgot. Tokuro Fujiwara was responsible for both Ghost N Goblins and Mega Man along with Bionic Commando, Strider, and Resident Evil to name a few of his other works.
This looks like a decent Ghouls n Ghosts clone, I'd like to see more of this.
I don't understand the fact when people say that if another game is coming out on the same day they can't buy two games. You could easily play this in between breaks from Smash. I'll personally be playing this more than Smash probably.
Question: if she loses her armor does she run around in a bra and panties, ala the original GnG?
This does look pretty cool, will probably bite at some point if the reviews are favorable enough.
@Mordridakon The game is based on the developer's daughter, who's under 10. It'd be a bit... weird, if that did happen.
Feel like I've been waiting for this forever! Kind of bummed it's coming right on the heels of Monster Boy though.
@Spiders Believe me when I say, it wasn't an easy decision for the team to make. But we promised that the game would be fall!
@eripmav Fair enough.
Damn, a bit of an unfortunate timing, but Xmas is right around the corner, so, I'll be picking it up then.
@eripmav I'll buy day 1 for support, and we'll see if amazon delivers Monster Boy on time.
@Cobalt I thought you cared only for performance so I was expecting you to buy it on the PlayStation...
@Balta666
Like you said : "I thought you cared only for performance".
This is the biggest problem here, people judge other because they thought...
I care only for good games and I give the respect back to the developers who promised a Wii U version some years ago.
To realease their game on the Wii U is a great proof of their serious.
I like that.
@Cobalt sincere apologies. I forgot that it is not about performance but that you hate switch and hate even moreall the people that love it, buy it and continue to buy overrated ports
The Wii u?! That was unexpected, but good news nonetheless!
@Balta666
Again, I don't hate the Switch at all and I don't hate the people who love it and buy it... BTW I OWN A SWITCH and I LOVE THE SWITCH !
What I don't like is THE POLITIC AROUND THE SYSTEM !
Ports, ports, ports and almost no quality 1st party exclusives.
The price of the accessories totally extravagant, the poor online quality that you have to pay, the communication about more than 1300 games when 10 max are real quality exclusives titles etc...
Don't you see how Nintendo changed during the last years ?
Don't you feel that the quality is lower than ever before ?
I'm sorry but I LOVE THE SWITCH, I LOVE NINTENDO but when something is bad, I refuse to say that is good... just to be a nice little sheep...
@Cobalt it is hard for me to understand when you say that you Love your switch when I heard you say over a over that you regret your buy and that you're thinking a out selling it.
I see things differently as I am very happy with the way things going by selling a product that it is compelling to a bigger audience and one that buys games in masses as per opposition to Wii ( which will bring more games with times). I couldn't care less about specs so that helps for me.
You talk a lot about lack of games excluding ports so let me try my best:
Botw - It launched at the same time therefore you cannot say that you played it first on other system (also is the better version)
Arms
Splatoon 2
Mario Rabbids
SMO
XC2
Gold story
Celeste
SMT
SMP
Octopath
Pokémon
SSB
Starlink
FIFA
NBA 2K
Finally mentioning that games like red dead are not in the system brings absolutely nothing to the table (just go play it on the Xbox, if you own all system why do you care so much lol...)
@Balta666
My goodness...
The list of despair...
@Cobalt lol it the list of games the might cobalt accept actually by library is getting close to 70 games...
@Balta666
Botw (Wii U game "re-developed" later for Switch to have the same launch date... but still a Wii U game)
Arms OK
Splatoon 2 (1.5 syndrom but OK)
Mario Rabbids OK
SMO OK
XC2 OK
Golf story (indie) OK
Celeste (indie multiplat)
SMT (Where is it ?)
SMP OK
Octopath OK
Pokémon (pokémon Go for Switch LOL)
SSB (SSB for Wii U version ++ but OK)
Starlink (Not an exclusive even with Fox)
FIFA (not an exclusive and inferior)
NBA 2K(not an exclusive and inferior)
So, your list of REAL exclusive titles is :
Arms
Splatoon 2
Mario Rabbids
SMO
XC2
Golf story (indie)
SMP
Octopath
SSB
I'm dreaming you know... Muhahahaaa
@Cobalt I never mentioned the word exclusives. I said excluding ports. Also for me there is no AAA and indie there is good and bad games and that's why I am extremely happy that the game that I have been saying the whole year is my GOTY is actually on the contender (even though is obviously not winning the prize).
The truth is switch has a better library than Xbox right now and will keep growing even better. Will it ever be as good as ps4? Unlikely as even though it's best games are in line with ps best games it won't have the same number of quality "new" games and that's fine this is not a war
Probably my Last U download to complete page 3: my body is trembling with anticipation.!!
