Okay, now we're straying into familiar territory. With tonight's Nintendo Direct getting everyone's pulse racing, it seems the old rumour about a Star Fox racing game from Retro Studios is doing the rounds once more.
According to a post from GameFAQs user Vergeben, the long-rumoured Star Fox: Grand Prix will finally be revealed this evening. He's got form with Smash Bros. character information and his original claims for the barrel-rolling racer were backed up by other websites; we, too, heard things on the grapevine.
From Vergeben's post:
From what I hear you won’t be waiting too long for it to release as I am hearing spring & there is even a beta scheduled to happen soon after its announcement tomorrow.
That last line sounds interesting - Nintendo is hardly famous for its pre-release betas, although the Splatoon 2 Testfires and Global Testpunches for ARMS arguably set precedent, especially if the company is looking to push a theoretical online component. With Retro now taking on Metroid Prime 4 development duties, perhaps the company was simply too busy with this until just recently.
Do you think this holds any water? With the rumour mill in full swing, can tonight's Direct possibly please everyone? Let us know in the comments.

Vergeben correctly predicted the final Smash roster and that Inciniroar/Ken would be the final fighters. So it seems likely to me
No, today's Direct will NOT possibly please everyone. That's simply impossible, and knowing some individuals on here, I'm preparing myself for a whole hell of a lot of whining afterwards...
Haha I doubt it but I hope I'm wrong ... Would be interesting
I heard rumours that retro have been working on something for a while I’m pretty interested in this unless they were working on Metroid prime trilogy for switch who knows until we get the direct
I'm torn. I want more Star Fox, but racing??? Granted, I would love to see the Fire Bird from SF643D again. We know where the items would come from, speaking of.
What I really want is an ACTUAL On-Rails game with lots of secrets/paths for YouTube fodder (and to shut the "Waah It's just like 64" and "On Rails would never sell!" whiners up) and without dealbreaker gimmicks.
I know it isn’t a universally held opinion but for some reason i really really want this to be true (and good, obviously).
I couldn't care less about a Star Fox racing game. Just give us F-Zero instead and while we're on the subject Star Fox should be a proper on rails shooter like Star Fox 64 was.
These two things are what everyone really wants. Nintendo must be blind and deaf if they think we want Star Fox racing.
Someone said DKC3 would be nice and now I kind of want that
didn't Nintendo teased an online game using NSO during investors meeting?
if it's not anything else, it could very likely be this game. from what verg is saying about a "beta" of some sort.
I never ever played star fox, but I dont think we need nor a star fox racing neither a new Fzero.. we have mario kart...
Nintendo better announce Metroid Prime Trilogy, a new 2D-Metroid, a new Zelda, F-Zero, Wave Race, Donkey Kong, Mother 3, Pikmin 4, new 3D-Mario, SNES-, N64-, GCN-Online and a bunch of new IPs or else they're DOOOOOMMMMMED!😱
Regardless of confirmation, I can't wait for the Direct to shoot down any and all rumors.
I think it sounds like a great idea on paper. And if it's indeed from RETRO it's pretty much guaranteed to be great.
If this game is on par with MK, I’d be interested. If this is another decent game, count me out.
I'd rather have a new F-Zero and a new Star Fox game to make Star Fox Zero non-canon.
That quite an early release given we have seen nothing of this game thus far.
I will be so happy if this is true, but I am not going to get my hopes up. That is how a Nintendo Direct can disappoint you.
I'd rather see F-Zero as well, not as invested into the star fox series. However if it's made by retro it has good potential at least i'd say.
Interesting!! Jon Cartwright predicted in Gamexplain's discussion video yesterday that Star Fox Grand Prix will release on April 5th with a Beta beforehand.
Very specific! Curious!
Nintendo said that it would be releasing a new game that would make great use of it's online service. And with how great Mario Kart 8's online was, this could be the game they were talking about.
Am I the only one that feels, if Nintendo is going to be doing a sci-fi racer it should be called F-Zero?
If this is true I want Battlestar Galactica skins so I can race as Starbuck and Apollo. Original or reboot, it's really all about the Viper.
If this is first person view it will make it different enough from MK and Sonic to be it's own thing on the Switch.
OH gawd I hope it isn't top down motion controlled like that Nintendo Land mini game. shivers
Star fox spin off?
Well we all know how well the metroid spin off was received.
@Lord To be fair that was because people wanted a new Metroid game after years of not getting one. While we did get a new Starfox about 3 years ago, so it's not that big in demand.
@rjejr Hey now I loved the F-Zero Twister Track minigame lol. It was one of the best in that game.
Granted this is just a rumour as well as being far from everybody's cup of tea but I pray to god that this game is real. The sound of a Star Fox racing game behind the helm of Retro Studios (who are now also working on Metroid Prime 4 so zip it Metroid fans) that's apparently coorperating an adventure-like mode sounds exactly like my cup of tea. Not to mention it will also be a great way to get the franchise out of it's rut because sorry people, the last good Star Fox game was SF64 and the on-rail shooter is a VERY outdated genre that only captures the attention of a very niche crowd.
Also, if you were forced to choose between a racing spin-off that sounds like it could hold a lot of potential and give the franchise a source of long overdue fresh air or ANOTHER Star Fox 64 reboot except this time with slightly prettier graphics what would you choose?
Yeah, this could potentially be the "game everyone will be excited about" we heard about recently. Though I won't hold my breath, we are waiting AGES now for a new Retro game. But if it exists and it will be shown, no way will it be released this Spring. Especially if its a big game, Nintendo will hold it untill Holiday 2019 (also fills the Metroid gap that way).
I'm glad to see that one year later, basically every comment I see about Star Fox Racing is positive. Compared to the initial chilly reaction... this game may have a chance. And quite frankly, I'm ready for a break from the typical Star Fox scene with how badly that's been screwed up lately. Starlink reminded me why I love the characters, let's see them follow up on that.
Potentially, Star Fox GP release/announcement was delayed so it didn't compete with Star Link.
I’m dying for tonight’s direct!! I haven’t been this pumped for a direct in what seems like forever. I can’t wait
What if this game was the new F-Zero? I'd buy it.
Nah, the cancellation rumour awhile back sounds more realistic.
@electrolite77 I'm with you. A mix of Starfox, F-Zero and Diddy Kong Racing developed by Retro sounds incredible,a dream game. I hope the rumours are true.
@link3710 Don't get me wrong, I'm not exactly excited about the track record of spin-offs and especially where Star Fox hasn't had the strongest performance in recent entries (which is criminal).
But racing? And in space? How bad can that be? It's like Starlink - you're guaranteed to have a decent time just on the premise. Would need incredible attention to detail to be "great," but not likely to be outright terrible.
@Moroboshi876 Starfox X F-Zero GP,sounds good to me.
@KingBowser86 @OorWullie
I just have good vibes about it (even though it may not be real). One of them where people didn’t realise how much they wanted it until it was a thing.
Make a good Star Fox and Excitebots 2. I don't want this.
@rex_rex what a childish comment. You do realize that Mario Kart and F-Zero are too VERY different types of racer, right...?
@rex_rex booooo!! No! Bad comment! Go away.
Seriously. You’ve never played F-Zero GX if you think Mario Kart 8 fills its shoes.
@rex_rex Completely different games my dude.
Meh. Still doubt it
Nintendo better announce Metroid Prime Trilogy, a new 2D-Metroid, a new Zelda, F-Zero, Wave Race, Donkey Kong, Mother 3, Pikmin 4, new 3D-Mario, SNES-, N64-, GCN-Online and a bunch of new IPs or else they're DOOOOOMMMMMED!😱
@MrBlacky
[s] All out after the direct [/s]
@rex_rex Errr... Mario Kart & F-Zero are two different beasts.
Fafonio and IndieLink
Fzero I played on SNES.. really good.. but look, play mute city you can have the same vibe with better chars..
but after SNES, just crap... on 64 and cube.. it does not sell well..
Yes, im from the NES/SNES age, then i didnt play anything from 64/CUBE/WII era.. hehehehe.. but on switch....
It's not that I dont want these games tonight... it's just I think there are some better to be announced!
@rex_rex this comment doesn't make your initial comment any less mind-boggling. Your tone reminds me very much of someone else who comments on here...
@Mogster again, it's not that I dont want.. let's see if they will be announced.. personnaly, i want persona 5 and the metroids (coz i have never played them)
@Mogster remind who? hahaha
There's definitely room with the advent of online play for an F-Zero GX sequel.
Would love to see the Death Race lobbies always full. Heck, for that matter, make arenas and let's have a Destruction Derby mode, too.
@rex_rex You should take F-Zero GX for a spin, if you have the opportunity, it'll blow your mind!
I'm fine with it as long as they mash-up the Star Fox and F-Zero universes cannonically and make Captain Falcon and co. guest racers too. Cap needs some spotlight again.
@Tharsman I'm a gloomy FZero widow like must of you guys, but maybe a racer with FLYING ships would help differentiate from Mario Kart in Nintendo eyes... don't know.
Came here to say, "Great work on the article title. Love it."
We don’t need this or an F-Zero if Mario Kart has perfected the racing genre. Y’all need to leave Captain Falcon in his grave (even though I love him)... please...
I was sad when this wasn't shown last E3. I think Retro could do a really awesome racing game and clearly have love for Nintendo properties. Hey, and a human version of James McCloud is in F-ZERO... Maybe we can see animal versions of some F-ZERO characters. (Yes, I just heard how that sounds...)
Everything about the idea of such a game just screams of shopped-out third party cash grab to me. Ya know, like some third tier game cashing in on the Star Fox name that no one ever asked for or wanted, and that will ultimately just tarnish the brand further and leave us longing for the next proper Star Fox game and title that might finally do the name justice again. As well as leave us wondering why they didn't just give us a new F-Zero instead--the other racer most Nintendo fans actually want.
If this Star Fox racing game does indeed exist, I really hope I'm wrong in my feelings about such a thing, because what a total and utter waste of breath it would be if I am right. And that doesn't mean a Star Fox racing game can't turn out to be something amazing--I'd be so happy if it was something genuinely awesome (like Mario Kart turned out to be for the Mario brand)--but something about the way it's been rumoured and just what it seems to be about doesn't give me that vibe or confidence at all.
Personally though, I think Nintendo has enough racing games in its catalog already anyway, and rather than making another random one no one asked for, while simultaneously neglecting a whole bunch of already existing Nintendo racing franchises people might actually want to see more of, how about giving us a new F-Zero, Wave Race, Excitebike (3D), Diddy Kong Racing, or even a new 1080° Snowboarding and the like.
@ThanosReXXX Wouldnt be this site, without all the whining.
Somehow, I get the feeling they may be pulling off a Detective Pikachu... Like how the movie lightly will touch on the Pokemon universe without resorting to Ash and so on, this would be a testing ground for a new FZero, in some way of concepts in the making
"Let's take a series that had its comeback flop and make a spinoff nobody wanted in the style of a game that fans desperately want instead. Clearly, we haven't learned this lesson already from Federation Force! leaks info What could possibly go wrong?"
@PhilKenSebben Maybe not, but it would most certainly be a more enjoyable one. Well, at least: far as I'm concerned.
@impurekind I agree with you on all those games, for a wanted list.
And of course, today's Retro Studios isn't the same as the original one, but regardless of the crappy source material and/or mash up of IP's, and provided this rumor actually IS true (obviously), I'm slightly less worried about it potentially being a bad game, if they made it.
Mind you, that's not to say that I would actually WANT this game to be real, but if by any chance it is, then those are my two cents on the matter.
This Starfox racing looks like a lie spread around to cover what retro was really doing. Maybe they are doing another shooter game. But we will see soon. I don't think was a bad idea a star fox racing game.
Thinking about it: retro helped mario kart 7 development. The chances of be real are substancial too.
I hope it's true because it sounds like it could be fun.
However, i wouldn't bet on a rumor from GameFaqs of all places.
@frogopus
Or just make it CAPTAIN FALCO! ; )
Would rather have F-Zero to be honest.
@Aozz101x Donkey Kong MMO
LOL. There goes that track record. (It's a racing joke!)
@patbacknitro18
Best was Pikmin, then Zelda, then Metroid, then ghosts, fruit carry, and capture Mario, rest were all single player games in a multiplayer game, it made no sense.
@Lemmy_the_Koopa tks buddy! i think i would love.. I never played anything on the cube.. but did u like yesterday direct?? hehe! I missed only persona 5 and mario party DLC.. but having mario maker 2!!! yeeeee
@rex_rex While non of the titles I hoped for got an announcement (mainly F-Zero), I was positively surprised by the western announcement for DQ IX on Switch and Astral Chain. So I am more than happy with the Direct.
Looks like the Starlink trailer killed this rumour
yes.. that is how all this talk has started.. no f-zero nor starfox.. hehe.
i never played any DQ.. maybe ill give a chance to this one. But i recently finished a biiig RPG, XC2 with 170 hours.. the closest ill get another one will be war groove waiting for fire emblem.. hehe!
In my humble opinion, I don't really want a starfox racing game in any other for than an option for the multiplayer mode
