During Microsoft's recent Xbox showcase, Bloober Team – the studio behind Observer, Layers of Fear and Blair Witch – revealed its next project, called The Medium.
This unique horror title was one of the most interesting titles to be shown and uses a 'dual reality' system which means the player is working through two entirely distinct worlds at the same time. It's a truly groundbreaking approach (a sort of real-time take on the Light and Dark worlds seen in Zelda: Link to the Past) but it would appear that Bloober Team has been working on this concept for quite some time – almost 10 years, actually.
Back in 2012, many video game sites received mysterious phone calls which played a recorded message that asked:
Snooping at the time revealed that Blobber Team was behind the domain related to the project, which was intended for release on the Wii U, PlayStation 3, Vita, Xbox 360, PC, Android and iOS. Even back then, the game was described as having a “completely new model of gameplay”. The domain listed at the time (medium-game.com) now redirects to the new game.
We imagine that the tech of the period wasn't quite up to the task of fulfilling the ambition of the team, but it would have been interesting to see Medium appear on Wii U all the same. Perhaps the dual reality concept could have been spread across the two screens?
Thanks to JTTS for the tip!

Newsflash: Wii U is not even 8 years old!
"...almost 10 years ago, to be precise" - that's not precise. If that is precision then please tell me you're not training as a surgeon.
/Pedant.
Huh? This article confuses me. What even is a “Wii U”? Is it an illegal drug?
Hey Nintendo Fans, I know you are starving for games on the Switch, but look at this! Doesn't this game look great? Too bad it's not on your console. Anyway, just thought about posting it here, in NintendoEffingLife!
@Bl4ckb100d If you're starving for games on your Switch, you're doing it wrong.
@Damo I'm hungry
I imagine the devs are not good. The "tech of the period" worked with GTA V so I think it was plenty sufficient.
A Nintendo page is advertising Xbox stuff now. Makes sense.

Haha! Good thing they waited! This game looks amazing now! Wii U would not have done it justice.
This game looks very very similar to Silent Hill, so much so I kept expecting a siren when switching between worlds/realms.
The one really appealing-looking game at Microsoft's show.
I think the change in platform was probably a good thing overall: the game is gorgeous and incredibly atmospheric.
@Bl4ckb100d Multiple games have released over the past couple of months. Biggish games. There's food on the table. You're just hunger striking because the feast doesn't feature the exact table items you wanted.
@gcunit You know that some titles start production (and know of consoles (or their prototypes)) years or months before .
To be fair, it’s literally just one of the Resi 4 prototypes that was rejected because the tech wasn’t there yet in the early 2000s. There’s no way Bloober hasn’t heard of that prototype.
So, is not a Xbox esclusive ?
@Lemmy_the_Koopa I do, you're right 😉
@Ralizah you are not wrong.
@doctorhino Was GTA V rendering two different versions of the same location at the same time, though?
@RazumikhinPG The game was originally planned for the Wii U, which I think is quite interesting... if you don't (plenty of people seem to) then maybe click on something else?
@Damo If you want an example of that look at siren for ps3. Came out very early in the console's life.
@CorvoRevo It's an Xbox Console exclusive, but it's still getting a PC release as well like every other game shown at the showcase.
@doctorhino I know the game, and I'd argue it's an order of magnitude behind what Bloober Team is doing with The Medium.
Would had been interesting concept, looking at the two screens instead of split screen. I’m still buying this game, but the split screen thing is a it jarring.
@Damo call me crazy but games stuck in 10 years of dev and multiple cycles of consoles tend to not be the best managed projects. Just saying
Even though this Switch isn't getting this title, I'm really happy to see it didn't get stuck in development hell! So far it's the one title that makes me want to purchase an Xbox Series X.
@Damo I was referring to the ads that show up on the website for this article. They were literally XBOX ads.
Older consoles may have been able to do it, but barely. It is akin to Batman's detective vision, but instead of analytical data or the scene it switches to a whole new world, Gianasisters did it, and on Wii u. It would have been very difficult for a full 3D adventure on 360/PS3/WiiU, but possible. It definitely would not look as good as it does now. Looking forward to it.
"tech of the period wasn't quite up to the task"
Well good thing they jumped ship. Nintendo still not that far from WiiU/PS3 levels 🙄
Saw it at $45 on Steam, this could end up a buy on PC. Even better if it ends up on PC Game Pass
Dang. Might need to bug an xbox friend for us to play this together
@RazumikhinPG NL has a sister company that does xbox reviews news and stuffs. As for other ads, they are based on what you recently searched through your web browser

@Obi-Juan I think they have to do more with the content of the page than with my cookies, because I never searched for Xbox stuff and also don't see Xbox ads on the other articles.
@RazumikhinPG Those are Google-served ads based on your browsing history. We don't have any control over which ones appear.
@doctorhino Who is to say it's been badly managed? Perhaps they parked the concept when they realised it was too ambitious for the current hardware? They've been working on plenty of other stuff since, after all.
@Damo can't you choose NOT to have ads from XBOX / Playstation?
Also, if my browsing history includes an article about an xbox game (this one), won't that affect the ads that appear?
@RazumikhinPG We can ask for individual ads to be suspended if we feel they are inappropriate for our audience, but getting ads for video games when you're visiting a video game site doesn't really qualify as inappropriate.
And I'd imagine that as far as browsing history is concerned, if you've visited ANY video game site – no matter which platform holder they might be focused on – you're going to see video game ads.
I don't think Google pays any attention to console wars and just sees them all as video games.
@Damo having said that, I've been visiting this site since the 3DS came out and it's the first time I see an XBOX ad (not an ad for an XBOX game, but for the console itself) on any article here. Coincidentally, it's an article about an XBOX game.
I think people will be surprised when they find out the game has roots in an even older Nintendo-related project.
