One of the few major Wii U releases that could still potentially be ported across to the Nintendo Switch is the Platinum-developed title, Star Fox Zero.
Although the controls would need a massive overhaul, many Star Fox fans are still wondering what the chances are of it happening. In a recent interview with the YouTube channel GameXplain, Atsushi Inaba of PlatinumGames admitted the company has no idea if it's returning, but said it hasn't been approached by Nintendo about it. Here's a translation:
To be honest we wouldn't have the slightest clue, Star Fox Zero was a bit of a special case for us.
Star Fox was, you know, an IP that Nintendo has had way before we entered the picture. That was a game that they were interested in making and kind of just lent out an offer to us "hey, would you like to kind of work on this with us".
As far as the future of any ports or whatever, maybe concern, no conversations have come our way. I don't think it's something we would be involved in, to be honest.
So, if a potential port is in the works - we're guessing Platinum either hasn't been notified or isn't involved. Alternatively, Nintendo has no plans to revive this game during the Switch generation as it has with Mario Kart 8, New Super Mario Bros. U, and a number of other titles.

I doubt it, tho I would not be surprised.
I want Star Fox in MK9!
I would prefer if they made a new game, since this games controls were not meant for the switch and it is basically a prettier version of Star Fox 64 (And 64 is basically a better version of the original).
This game was garbage and I hope it stays on the Wii U. I would rather they port starfox 64 for the 8th time
It might be a bit of a tricky one to port but not impossible. However the the resources it would no doubt require would probably be against it. I think the next Starfox has to do well otherwise I'm not sure we'll see the series again. Kind of like how Fire Emblem was after Radiant Dawn.
I found this game at my 5 below
I'd love a port of this game, actually (Star Fox Zero: Point One or something). Complete with an online multiplayer mode, an overhaul of the control system so that it's not as divisive, and more planets, if any.
One of the most underrated games on the Wii U. It totally deserves a second chance, but Nintendo would have to be smart with it.
I'd get it. Star Fox Zero was better than a lot of people gave it credit for. Although I would prefer one of the Gamecube titles got remastered for Switch honestly
Played it and adjusted to the controls, but it's just not a very fun game. Too many fiddly transformations, not enough traditional rail shooting levels.
Just make an HD conversion of the actually good Star Fox 64.
Im under the impression, that this game made sacrifices in performance to run on 2 screens simultaneously. On top of that, the gameplay uses 2 screen mechanics that won't work on one. Perhaps, when the switch can be used with the next console, like vita with ps4, maybe there will be an opportunity to revisit it. That said, I don't think the game got a great reception, may not be worth the hassle.
@Old_Man_Nintendo it was not garbage. Sorry if you couldn't at it more practice maybe
No need. We all prefer a new Star Fox, honestly.
Nahhhh...... hard pass. Didn’t even play the original version. If they’re gonna do Star Fox on Switch, they need to make a new one from the ground up, without a gimmicky control scheme that completely ruins the game.
Given fan reception, I doubt 0 will come to Switch. Personally, I found the game to be fine. The controls did take some getting used to, though.
Port over Assault! I can’t be the only one who still loves that game.
@DrJoson I fall in the same camp, I enjoyed Zero a lot more than I anticipated. I had a feeling I may like it, but ended up liking it more. However, I'd buy this and a remaster of Assault (as it's one of the GameCube games). Such an underrated entry in the series IMHO.
@Toshiro_Baloney You're not, I'd consider Assualt one of my favorite GameCube games.
@Toshiro_Baloney that game was good, but the on-foot missions were...interesting.
Star Fox please
Nintendo fans: WE WANT INNOVATION! SOMETHING FRESH AND DIFFERENT!
Also Nintendo fans: THIS IS GIMMICKY TRASH!!!
@Toshiro_Baloney Assault is my favourite game in the series so I'd be all for that. It would definitely sell better on Switch too seeing as it released on the fairly unsuccessful Gamecube the same year that the Wii was announced
@rockodoodle I like that idea very much!
@rockodoodle The only thing I didn't really like about it was the controls. I never found them comfortable.
The heavy Gamepad integration will make it hard to port to Switch without a significant reworking. At that point, you may as well make a new StarFox game.
And if StarFox Zero was indeed going to be ported to Switch, it's mostly likely that some random third party port studio that would work on that pory, not Platinum themselves.
Why don't they ask!
Then we might actually have a story here.
Nintendo are not omniscient gods of the gaming world - and I don't see why a third-party dev can't approach them and say: Hey remember that Wii U release that didn't reach it's potential - we think we know how to tweak it and make it great for Switch - what do you think?
Otherwise what is Platinum - inert?
Believe it or not, this is one of my most anticipated switch ports. Of course I know the controls need to be overhauled but that would make me even more happy. It was a huge turnoff to me having to use that gamepad to aim around while I was missing all the beautiful environments, etc. Everything else was great about the game except for the forced motion controls thing with the gamepad. Remove the forced aiming around thing and just replace it with the standard on rails N64-ish stuff. My only complaint with the game was those controls!
I swear they’ll have a day one sale from me if they ever port it like that.
@Toshiro_Baloney I've always been curious about Star Fox Assault but the reviews put me off. Might get it now.
Everyone has it wrong on the control scheme. It had nothing to do with the gyro assistance. Splatoon proves that perfectly. The part that needed to be optional was the 2 screen model. Just when you get comfortable with the controls you are forced to switch to a smaller sized screen with different controls, sometimes not realizing that you were supposed to. And then back again. It was jarring and took away from the experience of what was actually a great game. I've beaten this game a few times because I love the series, and each time I go to play it, it becomes more of a chore than the time before.
Keep the gyro assistance, but make it optional.
Take away the dual screen aspect.
Add in online multi-player and it would be a day one purchase for me, and should give this game the chance it deserves.
Just my opinion.
Why would Nintendo need Platinum to port SF zero? They just polished the game, a port would require a partial rebuild to work on Switch, that would be Nintendo or a sub contractor on the cheap to tinker with. If Platinum had built the game I can understand them being asked if they would like input on a port, but this is a Nintendo IP. It's on Nintendo. I'd like to see another Star fox game but maybe leave Zero on Wii U where it was intended. Switch deserves a more story driven and open Starfox game, unique to it's strengths. No more rehashes.
Edit: I really enjoyed the Starwolf dogfight in SFZ, the best dogfight in any game ever (coming from a free space 2 and Starlancer fan)If they had more of those moments in the game, instead of the lackluster gyrowing, Zero would have had a better following.
Id like to see a new star fox with slme of the idsas from this game. Kind of unfortunate the dual screens dampened the enjoyment.
Probably for the best it doesn't. One of the worst games I've ever played
@wazlon assault is pretty good but probably the cringiest one in terms of characterization and story. Underrated tho for sure
I'd rather they rerelease Starfox 64 with no broken gimmicks
This is probably for the best. Of all the Wii U exclusives that should come to the Switch, this is one that shouldn't, and I say that as a Star Fox fan. This is a series that needs an Adventures-like entry, something that does things completely different. The controls aside, Zero shows that rehashing 64 just isn't the way to go for the series. The reality is that you are never going to do what 64 did and do it better. The series needs to expand and do things differently in the same way Breath Of The Wild does things differently.
The gamepad was what made that game fun/interesting. It’d be boring on Switch.
@Rockodoodle
Of course? That's what play testing is for. Innovation for the sake of innovation is dumb. Nobody likes an idea or mechanic just because it's innovative. The mechanics being fun and well implemented is just as important. It's the developer's job both to come up with ideas and to find whether people consider those ideas fun.
It's perfectly consistent to want original and innovative ideas and to think that a particular idea is gimmicky and broken? Just because someone states a priority (originality) doesn't mean they have no other priorities (like fun).
I can’t see this being done without a serious overhaul. Several stages were built around the dual screen system especially to reach some of the high scores. Unfortunately it was a game very much crippled by the insistence of its control system. With some practice I was able to get better but I still always felt the dual screen system merely created an unnecessary problem. About the only way it would truly work is by using a VR headset.
Honestly, I’d love them to give Bandai Namco and Project Aces a shot. May be a little less on-rails 3D shm’up like but an arcade flight sim style Star Fox? Can totally get behind that.
While I really appreciate Zero for the fact it majorly improved physical character design (especially Fox), I think a switch port just isn't feasible. When you really get into the game and have to use the Gyrowing and Direct-i, the game-pad becomes an absolute necessity. I'd say the fact that Platnum is still clueless is proof that there will never EVER be a port of zero to switch. But hey, Fox in Starlink is awesome, and I'm not giving up hope we will see an original StarFox game in the future.
@Dodger innovation involves risk. A lot of stuff Nintendo does is goofy. Without the failures, they would not have its success. I thought this was a cool application of the Gamepad. But the market obviously didn't care much for the functionality.
@FX102A What I'd like to see is a game created in the style of SF64 (and by style I mean rails), but with a COMPLETELY NEW set of levels, story, and a few new game-play elements as well (maybe something with an open world hub?). And, bring over the awesome design of the characters from Zero and StarLink...
I'd personally never want to see Namco develop another StarFox game because while the gameplay of Assault is great, the characters don't look, act, or talk like they did on SF64, Zero, and StarLink.
yeah they wanna work on those projects that don't deliver
Well, as said in the article, the game would need a massive overhaul, given that the Switch does not have a second screen like the Wii U has. Maybe they can switch (pun not intended) between third-person mode and first-person mode with the push of a button.
But before a port of Star Fox Zero, I would much rather prefer a remake of Star Fox Assault, with more levels (roughly 5-10 more levels than there already is; an example is infiltrating the ruins of Andross's base on Venom to find the bioweapons program that they use against the Aparoids), tighter controls (for the on-foot and Landmaster portions), and the ability to play with others online, both in a co-op mode and the multiplayer mode.
Yeah I think a remake and not a port is the only way to save this
Weird how people don't want it because of the "gimmicky" control scheme, when its now a possibility to have it without them if they port it.
Mmmm was an okay starfox but not up to standard of starfox 64. Once u got past the controls! Only a handful of levels were good, and I just don’t understand how they can make an on rails game quite boring really. Just give us fast paced stuff like the Death Star trench run or more asteroid fields and stuff xxx
Star Fox ZEEEERO indeed--it's crap. But maybe with a massive overhaul to the controls and the removal of the terrible dual screen gimmick it might be oookay, I guess.
I'd GENUINELY rather have a new release of the original SNES Star Fox running in 1080p at 60fp with zero pop-in, much like the stellar version of Virtua Racing that M2 recently gave us on Switch. Now THAT would be cool (and it's honestly an all round better game than Star Fox 64 too, imo, which I know a few people think would be a good choice for an updated Switch port).
Much of the work would already be done if Platinum retooled preexisting assets to work with a more traditional control scheme. A large part of what made Star Fox 64 so popular was how well it controlled as a 3D shooter on rails. It sounds almost too simple, but it just felt great to play. Everything was quickly paced, intuitive, and responsive. I have too many memories that involve sitting around with friends for hours blowing things up in multiplayer mode.
This highlights one of Star Fox: Zero's glaring flaws. The lack of multiplayer is inexcusable. Combine that with how it needed to be sacrificed for a controversial control scheme, and you have a recipe for disaster. I bought the game at launch, played it for an extended period of time, and never picked it up again. Those controls were atrocious.
Nintendo could also port Star Fox 64 3D just to get a "good" Star Fox on the Switch. On a related note, it's a mystery as to why Nintendo hasn't been in the business of re-releasing popular 3DS games on the Switch. That would open the door to seeing games like the Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask remakes; games I've wanted on Switch for a while now, actually.
This desire could also be satisfied by implementing a decent system that preserves Nintendo's legacy titles, but it's hard to see that as a priority for Nintendo these days. I wonder if we'll ever be able to revisit classics as easily as we did with the Virtual Console.
No because it was very bad.
I wouldn't mind this happening as I missed out on this on the wiiu
I'd luke to see Sakurai make a Star Fox game. Kid Icarus Uprising was the best Star Fox game I've played in a while.
No, dont need that game again. Just develop a new Star Fox game, without Platinum involved
To be fair, that game is 100% hot garbage, so might as well save the time and effort for a different project.
I'm surely the only one, but in my opinion the controls were what made the game interesting. Without them, it would just be a quite mediocre and relatively uninteresting game.
@MrBlacky you’re definitely not the only one, check out my comment above.
It was a good game. Maybe not excellent... but it was good. And a “Nintendo good” is way better that “other company’s excellent”
I liked Star Fox Zero a lot and would likely purchase a Switch port. But we’ve seen too many rehashes of 64’s story.
I also liked Starlink a hell of a lot. That game is underrated and hints at where the future of this franchise should go, minus the toys to life implementation.
So I’d much rather see a new game in the franchise that pushes the series forward with a similar game design to Starlink and intense space or airspace dogfights seen on the level of Star Wars Battlefront 2.
Nintendo can’t add a new game to franchises like F Zero, cause they don’t know how to differentiate it from the others, but they can release four versions of Star Fox. I suppose the take away there is story really doesn’t matter to the figure heads.
Is this necessary? We have Starlink on the Switch which is a lot more fun and better value in terms of the amount of content. Star Fox Zero was ok, but even if you change the controls to a more standard form it's still not one of the Wii U's best games by a long stretch.
@JesWood13 if you didn’t even play it... how can you have an opinion about it?
I would be quite happy to have the opportunity to play this on Switch since I never had a Wii U and I love Star Fox.
Eagerly awaiting a new HD remaster of Star Fox 64, and it seems many other fans of the franchise are with me on that.
I'd appreciate a rail shooter. It may not take long to play through but it would take less time to develop and just charge less. I'd really like a game where you could play four players through online or wireless local. That would be a fun rail shooter.
I hope Nintendo gets on the ball and starts porting over some of the great games from the past with updated graphics.
This would be a money tree for them.
@Dirty0814 opinions. I thought it was garbage too.
I would be very happy if it did hit switch; it would be a perfect fit! Loved this game.
I've never played the game so I don't know how good or bad it is, but if the motion controls are made optional and I can use a control stick to control the vehicles, I might be interested. I'd be more interested in a completely new Star Fox game if Marcus McCloud is written out and never heard from again.
WILDLY UNPOPULAR OPINION: This is the best Starfox game. Once the controls are mastered, no other game in the series matches it in moment to moment action.
@whitespy12 agree. Just like any Platinum game. They mostly all are amazing... you just gotta git gud
I’m ok with this.
I thought Starfox Zero was brilliant, controls were to finnicky for its own good though. Really would love a reboot or a completely new epic on the rails blaster. Don't start making open world crap adventures. A proper rail shooter please!!!
I'd rather see a new star fox or just port for the 3DS remake rather than this game.
@Old_Man_Nintendo wouldn't a new version of 64 be the third? Or are you counting Virtual Console?
Personally, I think they should just... Make a new Star Fox game. Without gimmicks. Pick a consistent design direction. They could embrace the arcade-feel of the series' roots and make an awesome rail shooter, like Zero minus the utterly needless control setup. Or, team with Namco again and make something off an Ace Combat style, which would just mean a focus on All-Range mode style missions with objective phases. Or, wishful thinking, but go a little more adventurous and make something more open, maybe having side environments to explore and take on missions, dock areas, maybe bases to walk around. That kind of got in my head as something of an evolution of Starlink (not a SF game, but the formula could be adopted).
@Dirty0814
Sorry if you couldn't at it? English is my first language and that sentence hurt my brain lol
God I hope not, keep it where it belongs
we all totally want the same starfox game from the snes, n64, 3ds, wii u, and then for the switch!!!!!!!!!! not really. Nintendo really doesn't listen to fans and it is disappointing. Seen in paper Mario and more importantly Star Fox
Platinum have no idea how to run a Kickstarter either.
I loved 64. But the controls on Zero were so bad I can’t remember if I ever beat it. Initially I gave up early on. Came back, and it was still terrible.
The controls really ruin the experience. 64 had great controls. I could see Zero being fun if they fixed the controls. But I don’t think Nintendo is willing to admit their mistake.
I don't really get the amount of hate this game gets. Sure, it's not great and I'd rather not replay it, but it's nowhere near Other M kind of disaster.
I loved it, but I couldn’t play it much after my first run. Despite getting relatively use to all of it, some stuff was still just too ridiculous with two screens. Like the force field boss. Ugh. I wouldn’t mind trying it again on Switch. Not sure how it would work though, unless they just rebuild it for single screen.
Personally I hated this game! I couldn't handle the controls and I ended up throwing it in the box of shame. I'd rather see Twilight Princess HD on Switch. I didn't buy it for Wii U hoping for its release on the Switch.
@boredlizard Starfox 64 is way beyond the original, they are so different the only thing that remains is the concept and progression of moving from planet to planet.
That's like saying Super Mario 64 is Super Mario Bros and Super Mario Odyssey is Super Mario 64.
Star Fox Zero is a fantastic game with an inventive and rewarding control system, it has what they call a learning curve however it does take more than a single play through. I've been playing it more recently and the dual screen setup has become second nature.
Co op is brilliant.
And it sold so poorly I'd say the ones on hating it here are Switch owners with a chip on their shoulder who've never played it.
@Strumpan I've replayed it countless times and only started going for the hidden routes and levels. So I have been playing it all over again and going for the gold medals.
It's an arcade blast.
@impurekind I know we all have opinions but for me the original Star Fox SNES is nowhere in hell near the same league as Star Fox 64. That's like saying Super Mario Bros Atari is better than Super Mario World - there is no other comparison.
Own both, Star Fox SNES was never a good game and is even more painful now today - of course for nostalgia purposes it has that retro cool visual style which is the current trend.
@RasandeRose Platinum only came on board the last six months to help complete development.
Switch is here to stay. Never say never.
Unless they do a rework of the controls for the game, I do not see this happening. Especially on how well it fared when released.
I for one welcome a re release of this game! Sure it had it's issues but i still quite enjoyed it. Oh and just a little P.S.A. for those who couldn't handle the awkward gamepad aiming thing. I bet you didn't know you can switch to cockpit view just by pressing select which puts it right up on your TV screen. It totally eliminates the need to look down at the gamepad while aiming. This sites very own review of the game failed to mention that.
There you go. Problem solved!
Oh and for those who actually finished the game in the credits there's a little touching tribute to Iwata. It reads, This game is dedicated to our wingman who fell in battle. Neat huh?
I have 27 hours in Star Fox Zero, it's really awesome. Just one or two more traditional on rails stages to replace the asteroid stages and it would be my favorite in the series. I guess the stealth mission causes a big problem though as you don't get many pathway options that don't include the slow stealth stage, and if you are going for that highest score you will need to slowly do that stealth level.
No thanks, buying this game was the biggest mistake i made on the wii u i played it for around 2-3 hours and never picked it up again
My feelings on SFZ are...complicated. But I can't see it coming to Switch.
I wanted to love this game so much, but those controls just killed it.
I love Star Fox, it was my gateway into science fiction as a kid. When Zero was announced I was overjoyed to finally have a new game in the series.
I finished one playthorugh, tried another but just finally got sick of fighting the control scheme and never touched it again.
@liveswired On a technical standpoint 64 is obviously superior. SNES however has the better music and atmosphere as far as I'm concerned.
The setting in SNES was really dark and gritty. The first time I lost one of my wingmen in that game was shocking to be sure. I was shocked to see them just... blow up. No flying away to get repairs like in 64, if you didn't protect your wingmen in SNES they died and it was permanent.
That left an impression on me as a kid.
Starlink has held me over for the time being. Give us a new game or an HD port of Assault.
Good game, very cumbersome controls.
Maybe I am the only one here.... But I loved Starfox Zero! Would love to see an enhanced port or 2nd Part.
I’d love a HD port of star fox adventures. I loved the GameCube game.
@fafonio LOL no, this was not Nintendo good, itvwas Nintendo mediocre. And all fans should stop giving nintendo a pass just because "it's Nintendo".
Oh well, I'm talking to a wall here (not you specifically, but all people who thinks like that)
Star fox 64 aged terribly. I never played the Wii U Star Fox but would love to see it updated with graphics and gameplay.
Star Fox Zero was honestly terrible. We already have a great Star Fox game on Switch, it’s called ‘Starlink’ and will only set you back about $15 these days.
@Fulgor_Astral Mmhh i disagree... it was a good game. Not amazing. But way better than what people make it to be.
I only say that "I want" a port of Star Fox Zero because it seems like Nintendo's just porting everything from Wii U. That, and, if SFZ were heavily reformulated back into something more classic, that'd be worth a dip and much appreciated for Star Fox (as opposed to getting nothing).
Really Zero on Switch could only work if Nintendo was more willing to put in more control options.
@rockodoodle I’d say in most cases Nintendo fans are upset with Nintendo trying something different. Nintendo tends to not stick to the tried and true more often than not. Star fox hasn’t had the success it had since the 64 game with its deviations and paper Mario is another more recent example.
They should
Good game or not, it will find a new audience and sell better on the Switch
@NullPointerExcep The game was trash. If you want the Star Fox franchise to have a future, you DON'T want this game to get a Switch port. The only reason the Wii U game wasn't a franchise killer was because the console sold so poorly, not many people were subjected to the horror that was Star Fox Zero. If they port that game to the Switch, a lot of people will end up vowing to never buy another Star Fox title.
Well, if not Zero, Star Fox 2 had positive reception when it finally released on the classic mini and the Switch Online service. Aside from some broken systems like the infinite boost bug, that non-linear gameplay style with some on-rails missions sprinkled on some of the planets would be a welcome change to the formula. Honestly though I would be very surprised (and would squee with excitement) if we got a new Star Fox game at all after Zero, since I recall THAT game was basically the 'if this fails, the series is done' game.
I thought Star Fox Zero was great, and the hate for it is extremely exaggerated. I wouldn't mind this getting ported too, long as it means there's another port of 64 or maybe another Star Fox on the way, as unlikely as such is because of how the game sold... But then again, the Wii U wasn't all that great in sales to begin with, so that doesn't help. Oh well, still would be glad to do it all again.
Nah. Write it off and just make a new one.
The controls were so bad just port the lame tower defense game that came with it and sell it for $10.
@MayroMake Let me explain why I think it does deserve the scorn, and not just because of the controls. Honestly, I didn't mind the controls so much. Sometimes they could be frustrating, but it also added a bit of novelty. But back to the hate!
1. Remaking a 30 year old game with no obvious improvements other than graphics is nothing to be proud of.
2. It was a very short game.
3. It was a mess of a game that didn't know what it wanted to be. Sometimes it was an on-rails fighter game, sometimes it was free roam fighter game, sometimes it was an on-rails tank game, sometimes it was a free roam tank game, sometimes you were in a clumsy chicken walker, and then there was that boring gyro-copter. Had they just stuck to the free roaming fighter I would have liked it, but that only accounted for about 40 minutes of gameplay.
4. The voice acting was cringe inducing.
@sonicmeerkat Hey, I actually liked that "lame" tower defense game!
Even ignoring the terrible control scheme, it was only an average game at best. Don’t think it warrants a re-release at all.
Stick to Starlink with a digital only release of that. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than Starfox Zero and on Switch you can get the Starfox crew.
@TheFox That's cool and you're totally entitled to your opinion
I don't get the point of porting "Star Fox Zero." Without the Wii U's fancy control scheme (which some people do enjoy), the game loses too much of its identity to where it's just yet another remake of the original "Star Fox" and "Star Fox 64," just with HD graphics and switching out the alternate vehicles for the Arwing transformations.
@Dodger What exactly are these "broken gimmicks" in "64" that weren't already fixed in the 3DS remaster? This is a serious question.
@Dman10 That's why we have the 3DS remaster. Besides, "Star Fox 64" has actually aged quite a bit better than most games from the 32/64-bit generation have.
@Strumpan Hey, "Metroid: Other M" actually has good gameplay for the majority of its players! It has issues with its characterization (for some) and storytelling, but let's not pretend that the Star Fox franchise doesn't have some of its own issues in those areas. Overall, "Other M" is a much better game than "Star Fox Zero."
@BulbasaurusRex Agreed. It's a fun arcade shooter. I like the original and the 3DS remake.
I meant that I'd rather have a plain HD remake of Star Fox 64 than a Star Fox Zero remake, which heavily draws from 64 but had gimmicky controls. But what would be best is a new arcade shooter Star Fox that takes advantage of decades of technical and game design ideas: it would be cool to see a new game.
@whitespy12 Well, that's kind of the main issue. Only a small minority of the players are actually capable of mastering the unorthodox control scheme (no matter how much they practice) to where the game truly shines. Besides, a Switch port would take that away from those rare masters, anyway.
@Dodger Oh, so you meant you want them to rerelease "Star Fox 64," because it has no broken gimmicks? The way you said that was confusing.
Anyway, we already have the 3DS remaster, so I don't think it's necessary to have another one.
@BulbasaurusRex Yeah, in hindsight a relative pronoun would have been more clear: I'd rather see an HD rerelease of Star Fox 64, which has no weird gimmicks.
I agree there's no need for another Star Fox 64 remake. But if I had a choice hypothetically between a remake of Star Fox 64 or a rerelease of Star Fox Zero, I'd still rather play Star Fox 64 again. It's fun.
It was an OK game. I played through it and got some minimal satisfaction out of it. "Zero" Star Fox wow factor unlike what I got in the original 64 version.
Controls took a bit too much perseverance to master (it wasn't just me apparently, lol). The game has to engross me to keep me wanting to master a finicky aspect of it - especially the actual controls! I still kept on with it as it was SF!
As some have said reception was so poor, this is one port of the major Ninty characters' games that may well NOT happen....
@rockodoodle with the success Smash Ultimate had with all the different characters I honestly think it will happen even if it’s just adding more first party characters
Under the horrible controls was a good game. Would love to see it ported with something resembling sensical inputs
Much rather see a "from the ground up" remake of 64. By far the best star fox game and the on ground missions were actually fun unlike Zeros.
I'd prefer to see a complete new entry.
Perhaps with Fox's father and his team?
They could tell the story of the betrayal. It would be very interesting.
Also, they should definitely create sections of a 3rd person shooter where you can play with other team members and use their abilities to infiltrate places etc.
Nintendo should also get some ideas from Starlink and improve upon it.
@liveswired There's absolutely nothing "bad" in the slightest about the original Star Fox other than the technology of the time now being out of time. But the simple flat-shaded polygon art holds up much better even now than the muddy mess on the N64 as far as I'm concerned; the corridor-based level design of the original holds up better and is more fun than many of the levels in 64 that at times have that more open wrap-around design, which just isn't as good to control or play (I kinda hate all the all-range mode levels); the sound design in 64 isn't on the same level as the original (mostly the awesome music of the original); 64 has a more childish feel overall imo (the character dialogue is often cringe-worthy now instead of mostly cool and understated as in the original); and 64 doesn't control quite as well as the original imo (even with the analogue stick) with the ship actually swinging around too much and even flying outside of the camera view when you're controlling it so you can't actually see it properly (a cardinal sin in this kind of game imo) and the actual shots being far too loose and moving to far at the slightest touch of the analogue stick so you often end up shooting past what you meant to aim for; and so on. The only thing Star Fox 64 does better is the technology imo, but that's actually dated worse over time in many ways as far as I'm concerned (for me the flat-shaded polys hold up better than blurry/muddy-textured polys).
Tell you what, find some way to output them both now running in full HD at 60fps with the pop-in removed and no other changes at all--basically like the M2 version of Virtua Racing on Switch--and them come back and tell me which is actually the superior underlying design that looks better, sounds better and is more fun to play. . . .
Again, I think it's only the simpler tech that doesn't hold up quite as well in the original Star Fox, and I think there's a lot of people like you that can't see past that.
Certainly not top of the list to port to the Switch but I enjoyed Star Fox Zero quite abit. I played it again in January this year, for all the flack it got I'm glad I got it day one... Underrated in my view..
@BulbasaurusRex Characterisation and storytelling aside, Other M is a disaster. Nothing of what makes Metroid games good is there. Exploration? No, the level design is bland, boring and extremely linear. But the worst part is of course gameplay. The wiimote has too few buttons for a game like this and using the d-pad in this 3d game is an awful idea. The combination of the OP "sensemode" and autoaiming means all you do is spam dodge and fire over and over. There are a couple of fun boss fights, but ultimately you don't even get to finish the game yourself, since other NPC:s will do the most important deeds for you. There are lots of issues besides these, but if the gameplay would have been fun, those could have been forgiven. At least the graphics look nice.
@impurekind
I disagree on all those points. I played through both recently again on real hardware. My N64 and SNES are both modified for their best signals.
The most important point is clear:
You haven't played Star Fox 64.
All those points are incorrect verging on absurd nostalgia for the original.
Star Fox 64 is vastly superior in all regards including graphics and gameplay which are amazing and finely tuned, anyone can play.
The few all range levels Star Fox 64 has add to the variety and excellence.
I will say Star fox SNES is cute and charming as a historical reference, it has that in trend early 90s flat coloured polygon cool look kind of like Virtua racing, but the Virtua Racing Arcade version which Switch has was on another level and the Star Fox SNES never come close to matching it visually or gameplay wise.
Star Fox OG is completely unplayable for newcomers and is an unplayable mess unless like us it is engrained into your muscle memory. It is simply not a fun game.
I appreciate the SNES original for what it is - a piece of interesting, iconic history for Super FX and David Cuthbert pushing the SNES 3D - that is all wonderful - but it's silly that reality has to be pointed out.
You may just accept defeat on this one.
Star Fox 64 is the absolute champion in all areas. Go and play it, I can tell you love Star Fox SNES, you will absolutely explode with excitement at Star Fox 64 and never go back.
@sleepinglion totally agree.
I do think its perfectly serviceable for a casual playthrough of the game though. It's when you try to get all the medals, or go for a highscore that this game goes down in an u controllable, frustrating mess!
I hate all range mode.... More on rails levels please
@rockodoodle Mortal Kombat 9 has been and gone dude XD
@WesEds I think that’s the next stage of Mk.... add more characters and tracks from different franchises...
@liveswired I disagree on most of your points.
And anyone that claims the original Star Fox is completely unplayable for newcomers really doesn't have an opinion worth listening to imo. I played it literally the other day on my SNES Classic Mini and both the controls and gameplay more than hold up and it's still a load of fun to play (technical limitations and all). N64 Star Fox, however, has some actual bad control and gameplay implementation as far as I'm concerned, like the ship flying outside the camera view and the over-steering/overly-sensitive cursor/aiming that I mentioned previously as two examples. I've played Star Fox 64 plenty of times, including on emulators that help it both look and run smoother, and I even played Star Fox 64 3DS today too (a greatly improved version of the Star Fox 64 by all accounts), which still has the same issues I pointed out in the original. It's not a better game than the SNES game in terms of the fundamental control and gameplay and level design imo (and the soundtrack on SNES just blows the N64 one out the water too as far as I'm concerned); it wins simply in terms of being on newer tech and little else.
But I guess we just disagree.
PS. You do understand that if M2 did a version of Star Fox SNES output similar to how they did the amazing Virtua Racing on Switch then it would literally have HD resolution polygons with no jaggies, no visible pop-in (so enemies and level geometry that goes as far as you can see), and a rock-solid 60fps, right? And if they did the same for 64 it too would have HD resolution polys with no jaggies (but still those crappy muddy/blurry/repeated textures; unless they literally re-did all the textures in the game, which is about more than just updating the underlying engine code), no visible pop-in (so enemies and level geometry that goes as far as you can see), and a rock-solid 60fps, right?
And I'm saying in this hypothetical scenario to compare those two games running with the same level of tech (now it's a fair 1:1 comparison as I see it) but with the slightly different control and gameplay and level design and music that is unique to each version, and SNES Star Fox would blow the N64 game out of the water in basically every single way.
That's the point I'm making.
Because, let's get real for a second here, neither version is cutting it by today's standards if we're actually judging the original games running on the original consoles with the original controllers on old CRT TVs and so on. Although, even then, I'd still rather play the SNES version over the N64 version any day of the week.
Good idea lets port the worst star fox game ever to switch. Star fox adventures gets a lot of flak but i loved it cause I had a wavebird to play it with the missions with crystal where awesome and the whole game was great fun apart from that stupid really hard bit right near the end. It was great and underrated Star fox adventures 2 a new Star fox game or 64 remastered from scratch anything but zero please!!.
For anyone who's talking about Star Fox Zero's controls being terrible:
Those of you who haven't played Star Fox Command you should try it out, if you want to know what questionable controls look like.
I'm saying this as someone who doesn't mind touch controls, and someone who also doesn't mind Mario Kart Tour's controls.
For anyone who's talking about how Star Fox Zero's controls would prevent SFZ coming to Switch:
There could an option to have Single Stick and Dual Stick controls, just like in Star Fox Assault and Panzer Dragoon Remake.
Make a new star fox. Zero was a waste of everyone's time.
@Strumpan Wrong, the gameplay in "Other M" is excellent, among the best in the series! The Wiimote works great and overcomes the limited button issue when combined with the innovative screen-pointing mode, and the D-Pad isn't an issue, since the levels are cleverly designed as closer to 2.5D than true 3D areas. Yes, it's a little more linear than some Metroid games, but there is still plenty of exploration for upgrades and later side areas and no less than what's included in "Fusion." Personally, I prefer Metroid games to be more straightforward like that, anyway.
There is not much auto-aiming included (no more than your usual 3D third-person shooter), and the sense move is not at all overpowered. You will get hit over and over if you don't time it right and/or rely on it too much, and there is a lot more skill involved with the various mechanics than just dodge and shoot. Among other things, you also have to move around and face the right direction to shoot, use the morph ball and bombs for various things, pick the right spots for first person view for missiles and stuff, attempt the new move for jumping on enemies, and picking the right places and spots for emergency health recovery at the risk of getting finished off.
Most players agree with me. If you look at old "Other M" reviews, most of them, even the ones that give bad reviews, will still praise the gameplay if nothing else.
@BulbasaurusRex I'm happy for you if you liked it and I know many reviewers did too. If you want an in-depth discussion about the game from someone with the same opinion as mine, have a look at the Geek Critique video about it on YouTube, I think that's the best discussion about the game that I've seen (only if you're interested in Other M and its relation to other Metroid games of course, otherwise just keep on enjoying the game).
Lol its not even a good game.
I’d buy it if the controls were more like the classic N64 game.
@TheFox See it potentially could make $10 at the low end!
A new title that mixes the best levels from Assault from GC and Zero from WU. No more stupid walking bits and bring back sane controls. Like F-Zero, there needs a modern "Ultimate" version of this series. F-Zero should be based on N64, along with the DD track editor, and the best and most faithful tracks from GX, and a selection of the best 16 bit tracks, and everything 4-player split screen, of course.
@sonicmeerkat I just fired up Star Fox Guard last night to make sure I'm the right level of offended by your comments. OK, it is kind of a dumb little game, but I do find it fun to play. Sold by itself as a download, I guess $10 would be fair, although maybe $15 just to shake down the Star Fox fanboys. Or it could be sold by Limited Run for $30 and people would think they got a good deal.
@rockodoodle (#20) It sounds like Pokemon fans complaining about generation gimmicks then praising previous generation gimmicks
@BulbasaurusRex Indeed most problem on Other M were on the awful plot, gameplay was solid (but
sometimes technically unstable depending on setup)
Lets forget this monstrocity and leave it back.
If Fox Mc Cloud was a real person he would shoot himself to get away from this shame.
One of the Biggest IP of the 90s was handled as a small game remake.
This could be a life-saving grace for the game if it were ported and CHANGE the controls. It was one of those DEALT with it scenarios. Those stupid wonky controls keep me from defeating the final boss.
If we don't see some sort of Anniversary Collection with 64,Adventures and Assault alah 3D All-Stars, I'm gonna be slightly disappointed.
Same goes with Metroid.
@westman98 no rework is necessary- even on Wii U you could switch between the two screens with a press of a button and the game was supposed to be playable on game pad only! Port the game already- Starlink is such a thrash and lacks the intense action and polish of Zero.
