Nintendo has applied for Pokémon HeartGold And SoulSilver trademarks in its home country of Japan, reports Japanese Nintendo.
Both trademarks are said to cover 50 different types of products and services – including video games, as you might expect. The trademarks were filed on 7th September 2020, with both applications being published today, 23rd September, arriving just days after Nintendo, Game Freak and Creatures applied for a trademark for legendary Pokémon, Entei.
You can see them for yourself below:
So, does this mean we should expect a rerelease, or perhaps a Let's Go-style game with the HeartGold and SoulSilver branding? We'd argue probably not.
While the trademarks are bound to set tongues wagging across the internet, the reality is that most trademarks tend to expire after ten years. Pokémon HeartGold And SoulSilver launched in 2009/2010 depending on your region, so it's very possible that these new applications are simply renewing existing trademarks.
That's not to say that something isn't in the works, but it might be best to rein in any remake dreams. Still, we definitely wouldn't mind if that were to be the case – HeartGold and SoulSilver ranks very, very well in our list of the Best Pokémon Games Of All Time.

It's just a renew of the trademark. We go through this every five years, some people get easily overexcited.
The best Pokemon games by an absolute mile. Full of content, a great OST and I love being able to walk around with my partner Pokemon.
It's probably nothing, but damn if they released remasters of the remasters on Switch I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
as much as i would love a switch release or something, this is definitely just a trademark renewal
@Joriss or a soulrhythm?
It’s sad that this is probably nothing, but I would love either a re-release on Switch or a faithful remake with all of the content beat for beat. These are the best Pokemon games ever made (besides black and white).
The remasters, please. Not a let’s go style.
@Slowdive well at least these games are good
I'd rather want a collection like 3D All Stars than another unfinished game like SWSH
I would love it if they just added DS to Virtual Console and brought these over with Pokémon Home compatibility. I’d play through these again in a heartbeat to fill out my Pokémon collection.
They should do a DS reprint what with the insane prices it fetches.
Ah, trademark renewals. Basically Nintendo just doing what they always do to keep the video game industry standards up.
It would have been a lot cooler if they released Game & Watch this as opposed to a friggin' NES ROM that has already been released to death and can be completed in a single sitting.
@Low : I wouldn't mind quadruple dipping.
A re-release or remake or anything would be nice so that the price of the DS games can come down!
@mariomaster96 I'd rather they either stop doing as much side stuff or split dev teams and actually spend over a year developing mainline games from now on. Sword and Shield scream potential in so many ways but just ruin it.
Just re-release on Switch eShop along with all past games you could get on 3DS eShop. Especially with 3DS production officially ending.
@Christofu Yeah I think it's stupid how for example Let's Go was made by them. I think that would be something another studio could handle (like Grezzo made Links Awakening remake instead of Nintendo)
the spirit of those games are dead anyway
X & Y were the start of something awful. Sword & Shield made me realize that we likely aren’t getting good Pokémon games anymore.
Would be nice to see some of the older pokemon games on switch, although I doubt that will happen. The original Gold/Silver/Crystal games were some of my all time favourites, although I didn't find HG/SS to be as fun (due to the end game grind).
Personally I found Sword and Shield to be some of the best Pokemon games to date, but I think it would be great if they introduced an additional DLC for it so that we could travel between several full on regions like they did in those earlier games (I have always hoped they would make a game that allows you to travel to each region, although I really don't think they would ever do that).
Good, they should go back to basics. This latest game was meh. I'd love to see Silver and Gold remastered in a modern style.
Business as usual, nothing to see here.
...Though now I'm getting the itch to revisit my SoulSilver file....
Unfortunately just obligatory legalities that the lawyers drew up in the back office by themselves, the last bit of their cigarettes burning away as they stare blankly at mountains of paper, the scratchy hum of old fax machines filling the cramped, dim room.
I’m seriously about to go hunting for a legit copy of heartgold because I’ve never played it. And I want to.
I wonder if I should wait now?
Exciting either way!
@ChromaticDracula no you probably shouldn’t wait. Anything they put out now won’t stack up to HeartGold. It’s a great remake and with the super small chance Nintendo does re-remake gen 2, HeartGold’s price isn’t going to go down.
But why'd they only reapply for "Entei" and not the other dogs and legendaries from gen 2? 🤔
Pokemon let's go heartgold and pokemon let's go soulsilver
Really don't need another one.. pls just make another new game instead
I thought trademark renewals required the applicant to plan to actually do something with the trademark.
I mean, this isn't exactly Tim Langdall, the "Edge" trademark troll, but I thought that was the reasoning EA used to put him where he belonged.
I wouldn't be opposed to revisiting Johto on Switch, be it rereleases of the DS games or as part of the Let's Go series. But it's more likely it's just a trademark renewal to keep their butts covered.
Johto was my favorite region. When it came out I was in elementary school and finally learned to read. I beat the first without knowing how to read, I was 6 at the time when I beat the Red version. Part of me thinks this helped my reading when I was a child.
I’d prefer to see Let’s Go variants, already played through Johto twice in traditional form. Let’s Go was a fun game, this time they could add loads more features in and the map will be twice as large. Half the assets are already complete from the first game so shouldn’t be too much for them to handle.
It's either a new movie or a re-release. There's no way its a new lets go game, they've already said they're not making another one. So people really need to stop taking this kind of thing out of proportion. Everyone sees this kind of stuff only to get their hopes up and are inevitably disappointed when it's not what THEY want. Why do you idiots let game freak and pokemon do their own thing instead of constantly harrasing them about things you want, its seriously not cool.
@mariomaster96 OH honestly. not only do they have so many assets these side studios could use, but since the lets go formula focuses on just a generation, they have a lot less pressure. not a bad idea, you should pitch it
