Well, here's an interesting little fact for you: Mario Kart DS actually behaves slightly differently depending on which Nintendo DS system you use to play it on.
The DS classic, which has now been available for almost 15 years, features a different loading sequence if you play the game on an original Nintendo DS system, rather than any later system. On the original DS, Mario can be heard saying 'Yahoo!' during the initial loading screen, but instead says 'Here we go!' when played on any other console.
This strange little quirk was brought to our attention by Twitter account @SuperMarioFact, and while we're sure some of you will have noticed or heard about this before, we imagine plenty will never have realised.
We're not sure why the game would behave differently on a different system, especially considering the DS Lite is pretty much the same console on the inside.
If you're sceptical, here's a video showing the difference in action (we've also checked this ourselves and can confirm that it is indeed true):
Strange, huh? Let us know if you knew about this in the comments below, or whether you're just as baffled about the whole thing as we are...

Thats cool since there's a lot of DS
Wahoooo
I’m gonna try this out when I go home. Interesting find
Maybe some really primitive form of anti piracy on the DS. Lol
Are you sure it's not another joke from Charles Martinet? I can only hear "Gay Bowser" on the video.
very interesting! I'm sure there must be a reason behind this
I remember noticing this when I first got my DS Lite, after playing the game on my original DS. I assumed it was just meant to be a little easter egg depending on what system you used.
Now if 3ds made a different sound THAT would blow my mind
Yes, I did! I owned some number of every single variant of the DS, so it was quite neat to hear a different intro in the OG Phat DS vs every other model. I don't quite understand how the game knows which model it's in, but it's a neat touch regardless.
I only have a New 3ds. That's interesting, though.
Wow. I need to dust off the DS collection and try this.
Must be something to do with the firmware or different hardware audio circuit?
My guess is that if the firmware could be updated on the Original DS, it would load the same as the DS Lite.
Yeah, I have known this for a while now
Oooh, I didn't!
Played MK DS mainly on the DS Phat so the "wahoo" is more recognisable to me.
Clearly didn't pay much attention when I changed to a DSi XL (miss that burgundy console!)
I was surprised to see this as an article, but I guess there are people today who were not born yet when Mario Kart DS originally released. I always thought that this was a cool gimmick, and I remember discovering it for myself when I got both the DS and DS Lite when they were new. It’s cool to see that some people are learning about this for the first time through this article regardless.
Never knew about this, and I had both versions of the DS systems! It is a cool little feature though!
uh yes I know about this. Pretty obvious that it will be different because different consoles. But this did bring back memories when l had my pretty rare DSi console and l would play this game a lot...That's it I'm going to use my very old gamestop card to get this game again! I must I must
Oh great, so now I've got to go out and buy myself an original DS to get the authentic original experience. So pissed at this news. DS Lite is dead to me now.
Yeah I knew about this, discovered it myself back then although I never really gave it much of a thought. Still interesting though.
@Mr_Persona Obvious? Why would anyone expect the intro noises to change between versions of a game?
Even though I don't understand it, I love it.
I had the Mario Kart Red DS before I got a DS Lite, and I don't recall ever noticing this.
wow i was a Lite kid so I only ever heard the "here we go"!
How do I load Mario Kart DS on the Wii U?
I also load a little differently...depending on the chosen hour I get up
@thejuice027 You have to purchase and download the Wii U version from the Nintendo eShop. Many Nintendo DS games were released on the Wii U eShop as part of the Virtual Console line.
Funny thing, I kind of "knew" this (not in my active memory, but I've seen both) and never really gave a second thought to it.
@thejuice027 it is or was available on the Virtual Console.
And I thought this was common knowledge into the core Nintendo community! I noticed since I upgraded from an og DS to a DSi XL, I still prefer playing it on the first one though (I can "snake" easier lol).
broom broom wahooo!
I found that when I bought my 3DS and plugged my MKDS game. It was a funny surprise.
I noticed that but I chalked it up to the cart being a different revision.
I wish I had a DS. (I have the DS Lite)
@Bl4ckb100d Nice icon, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is one of the best anime movies. They should have made season 3
Why Nintendo? Now I gotta get an original DS to hear it. Now I have OCD.
I think I remember hearing about this years ago. I thought it had something to do with a concern that Yahoo!, the company, could potentially sue over the use of Mario shouting "Yahoo!" I believe Nintendo may have patched all other handheld consoles after to make sure he says "Here we go!" As the DSi and all others afterward could have more robust firmware updates, these would all reflect the change, where the original DS fat would not. I believe this was more about avoiding potential litigation than actual phrasing.
What's it say on the Wii U VC version?
I like to think this is the work of a single, low level intern who wanted to leave his mark. For years, he thought his easter egg had gone unnoticed, but today, somewhere, he smiles as he watches the sun rise on a grateful universe.
I never had the original one but only the ds lite, then the dsi. That is interesting though
@Bl4ckb100d My guess is it was made as a debug to be triggered in emulators or debug units if a certain variable didn't match. But since they ended up making multiple consoles it gets triggered on everything else.
It's also possible they had debug codes to display stuff on their special units. It was like a reassurance which mode you were in if you needed to get the debug screen.
@JMR_Alden Yeah that anime reminds me of my high school years, I love it and makes me very nostalgic n_n
I don't mind whatever Mario said on other consoles at least he didn't scream "Mwahahahahahaha....!" (fall into bottomless pit) 😂
I've never played the game, but I think I've heard rumblings about this little tidbit. Makes for some neat trivia and discussion!
I noticed this because my original DS was stolen in a car robbery. I had to wait until Christmas to get a Lite and realized Mario's boot sound was different lol.
Wow that's strange. I never knew about this before. I love finding out these sort of things, please do more articles like this!
Reminds me of Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages on the Gameboy Colour. If you played on a Gameboy Advance console you'd get access to a secret shop.
Wonder if there are any other games like this.
i love when developers like Nintendo add this kinda of details(it really add more charms to the games).
@link3710 can't tell if that's mocking me or not
@Mr_Persona It was meant as genuine confusion
@link3710 ah ok l couldn't tell. But hey when l have eyes that catch details, l wouldn't know if others mostly do. That's why l said that in the first comment.
Never heard of this. I wonder if it's an Easter egg, if so it's a cool one!
I already know. I own the Original Nintendo DS and a dsi. I usually use the og NDS cause now my dsi is maulfunctioning now a days. I always thinked when mario said "Here we Go!" on any new DS (instead of "Yahoo!" from the OG NDS), it refers that it is time to play MKDS but on the Insert any New DS Console. That is my own personal thought.
Slow news day?
That's interesting. Never knew that.
@Mr_Persona My point was more that most people never played it on both DS, since the phat got phased out in under a year, while Mario Kart DS wasn't out until later in the system's lifespan.
@link3710 then you should have said that in the first place. From my view l couldn't tell exactly what you were trying to say. Having autism isn't always easy in my life.
I remember noticing this after a moved from Fat DS to DSi back then. I think there was another game that did something like this too.
@doctorhino It has to be something along the lines of "anti-piracy" or "debug code to validate it's in a DS" lines, since Mario Kart DS came out 7 months before the DS Lite (November 2005 vs June 2006). [In the US]
It's not like Final Fantasy Tactics Advance GBA having different color settings based on the model, because that was released after the GBA SP was already out.
I've always thought they just updated later copies with a different audio clip
@Mr_Persona You and me both
@link3710 you're diagnosed with it too?
Sorta... let's just say my diagnosis history as a mess and put it at that. I'm still pretty confident it's the case though.
@link3710 I'm diagnosed with 3 things and one l hate most is epilepsy. Good thing it's not serious serious. But if you think you have autism, then l will talk to a doctor about it.
@Mr_Persona No need. I don't need an official diagnosis or anything, it's not like it's a disease.
@link3710 Yeah l guess.
Don't really care but a cool fact!
I grew up with the DS Lite so I'm always used to the "here we go"
