We've known about the new massive paid expansion coming to Monster Hunter Rise for some time now, but so far, little has been revealed about it.
That's all set to change next year - with Capcom teasing on social media it would share much more around Spring 2022, in the lead up to Sunbreak's Summer 2022 release.
This upcoming DLC will feature new monsters, locations, hunting actions and quest rank. In addition to this, there'll also be three new amiibo, which unlock special layered armour in the game.

Biggest questions from me: how many new monsters? And how much are you gonna ask for it?
I'm expecting an Iceborne level addition here, but I'm confident they're going to deliver. Rise was so good!
I would like to know on what other old returning monsters will be in Sunbreak with the new ones. Last old returning one we knew was that shogun crab one (I’m not good at remembering monster names that well lol).
It's super wishful thinking, but I'm hoping Capcom hits us with a "Hey guys, turns out we actually were able to figure a way to do cross-saves!"
Obviously it's highly unlikely at this point, but man, could you imagine?
I wanted to get interested in Monster Hunter this time around as Rise is the most accessible jumping in point for the franchise but I just couldn't do it. That said, I'm really happy that the game is getting so much support and all the updates look awesome!
@Browny 20-30 based on the big Capcom Leak.
sigh spring is so far away though but i hope we get gigginox to return for once.
@Pikachupwnage at least that's cheaper than iceborne.
I can never tell if Spring means like, March, or if it means Q1. The two seem to be used somewhat interchangeably in Japan
@DTFaux If not cross-play, then cross-save should be a priority.
Im definitely ready for new content in the game.
But even so, this game was my 2021 GOTY - put 300 hours into, done everything there is to do outside of a few really rare talismans.
I go back every month to 6 weeks to catch up on updates and new Apex Hunts if there are any, they gave us a stronger Magnamalo for Christmas which was nice.
This game to me is a top 5 must own games on the Switch.
yay! can't wait!!
@CharlieGirl That would be cool, but wonder if they'd allow people with a near year head start to play with people starting fresh?
@DTFaux The cross-saves and crossplay were what hinged on me buying the PC port, and if they don't implement those, then I feel like they probably lost a massive chunk of the playerbas for the pc version.
Also, given this isn't really a competitive game, crossplay would work for a game that's a year out, given that the players who got the game when it first released could help those who just purchased it.
@Browny suppposely 30+ monsters new and old especally if g rank is coming with that expansion.
@Axecon
I understand. The amount of information you are bombarded with just as you start the game can be overwhelming. Rise is the third MH game I've owned and is supposedly a more user-friendly experience, but it still tough to get into.
As someone who has also struggled, here's my advice: get an easy weapon (sword and shield, for example) and take the first missions. Don't worry about anything else. After you kill the first monster (a raptor-like creature), go to the blacksmith and you'll see you can craft new armor based on the materials obtained from the monster.
The moment I got my first upgraded item, the game somehow "clicked" for me. The rest I'm learning little by little. Still a long way to go, though. It also helps if you watch a couple of videos to get some motivation, like a weapon tierlist or a some basic guide.
As everyone else says, the game is worth getting into. Good luck!
I enjoyed MHR. Wishing them the best.
@SuperZeldaFun content wise Switch vs PC will be mostly same, aside from the silly amiibo stuff.
It will mostly be performance and resolution, plus this game is actually lighter on PC than World was.
As for the "full game on the cartridge" I doubt they will do that, the expansion will pretty sure be roughly same size as Rise is, so they need a 32gb cartridge.
I forsee a release with first game on cart and Sunbreak as a downloadable code in it.
I am going the PC route with Sunbreak, played and finished Rise on Switch but in the end I got more reasons to go PC for Sunbreak.
Approaching 500 hours on my save file. I'm there for it!
@Browny @RiasGremory
Let's take it down a notch. We're likely not getting 30+. The leak indicated 20, though it's unclear if that number also includes free DLC monsters after release. If not, I suspect we may hit 25 as a grand total. 30 at the absolute max.
So... expect 20, but hope for 30.
Ugh...I thought we would be getting a proper reveal trailer soon after whatshisface was announced. Oh well...
My wish list...
1. Gigginox, Gobul, and Qurupeco returns (seriously, 2 of these guys don't even show up in Stories 2. :/ )
2. Another remade map (I figured it would be either Deserted Island or the Misty Peaks, for some reason that ice map in the new teaser was giving me Tundra vibes, though)
3. Bring back monsters that we haven't seen in a long time, if I see Alatreon again, I'm going to punch someone, lol
4. Give me a final boss that can top Ahtal-Ka.
@Joeynator3000 They keep referring to this as a "massive" expansion. Currently there are only 5 maps and I can't see them only adding one measly new hunting map...something tells me we will get more than one new area. Most likely there will be a new town/port and two new hunting grounds (same size as typical maps).
@Bizzyb Usually expansions only include one main hunting map, even though 5th generation is breaking traditions, Iceborne did it with the Hoarfrost Reach. There's also the Guiding Lands but I think that's more like 4/4U's Everwood area.
So yeah, hard to say about hunting maps for sure. We may not even get a new Everwood/Guiding Lands here. That said, we already know about the new town/village or whatever, and we already know that we're getting more than just a flagship monster and the final boss, which was expected since Iceborne did more than that as well.
