Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai yesterday teased a new announcement, and today he's revealed it's his very own YouTube channel titled Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games.
As the title suggests, this channel will be focused on game development and what exactly makes games fun to play. It will apparently cover a "variety of topics" related to this, and you can watch his first video right now (above). Sakurai has also uploaded some other content fans and aspiring developers can enjoy.
Sakurai goes onto mention how he plans to upload videos in both English and Japanese (on a separate channel), and will aim to provide real game footage whenever possible. Just to be cautious though, he may focus on classic game footage rather than more recent stuff.
He's also been given the approval by Nintendo to show off Smash Bros. development builds and design documents he's written - so Smash fans can look forward to that. And just to be clear, Sakurai explained how "Nintendo isn't involved in this channel" and it is his own personal project.
He's also not looking to profit from it, so there won't be any advertising, apparently. And he will be keeping things in most videos "short and sweet" as he has to pay his video editors and translators. He also won't regularly be asking viewers to Like, Subscribe or hit the notification bell.
Here are some of the other videos Sakurai has uploaded to his YouTube channel so far. The first is a showreel of his creative works - even teasing his next work following Smash Ultimate as "TBD", and the second video is about design specifics:

Well, I absolutely was not expecting that. Can't wait for him to collab with Scott the Woz soon
....Oh, uh, alright then. Cool, lol
This is so cool! We need more advice and stuff from industry veterans, and Sakurai is amazing! Insta subscribe from me
That was the last thing I was expecting. Thats really good news for people who are inspiring to make video games, and ai wish other devs did things like this.
That is super cool. Sakurai-san has a wealth of knowledge and it’s awesome that he is sharing it with the world.
Move over Kojima’s Spotify Podcast. Here’s a real director giving us the goods.
COOL I hope someone translates or English subtitles become available!
Awesome. I'll definitely be keeping up with Sakurai's videos.
@Kirby_Girl He's publishing videos in both English and Japanese.
@BrazillianCara AWESOME! Thank you!
I always wanted to see more on how games are made, so hearing that an industry veteran is doing a series where he breaks it down, within a niche that many people don't really cover is just insane. I have to sub.
First Kit & Krysta, now Sakurai?
I kinda want him to find out how terrible the YouTube copyright system is. More as poetic justice than anything.
I WILL DONATE MY SOUL TO HIS PATREON.
It hasn't even been an hour and a half since he tweeted about it and he already has over 50,000 subscribers, lol.
This is pretty cool, I will give this a watch every now and then.
The stop for big moments video was pretty interesting. Definitely look forward to more videos from Sakurai.
Classic game footage sounds good. I am not interested in the technical process of creating games but everything else is interesting. Time Extension has really cool developer stories. I will watch it in the evening.
Ah yes. Giant text and red arrows in the thumbnails.
Dude is gonna put Mark Brown out of business
First YouTube channel I’ve ever been remotely tempted to subscribe to.
@KryptoniteKrunch I agree! I never made the connection before even though Kirby's Dreamland is my first ever Kirby game but that hit stop he put in Kirby, he also put in Smash Brothers and it is a cool effect and seen in some other games as well.
I'm excited for any old Kirby dev knowledge!
passion project is all i need to hear from his intro, he always seems to go full force on whatever he works on. im very curious on the informative, bite-sized topics he has in mind
Subscribed! what a cool guy
Cool. The games industry, and Nintendo especially, can be fairly tight-lipped about development techniques and philosophy. This kind of insider perspective is pretty rare and interesting. On the flip side, I guess he's probably not announcing any new game projects any time soon, because these videos could send all kinds of mixed messaging about something like that.
Great, maybe the developers of the Nintendo sports games should watch it and learn how to launch games with a decent amount of content that don't make players feel sorry changed 😙
”Why am I making a channel, exactly?”
A bit bored perhaps? (I doubt there will be any kind of insider information or “groundbreaking” gaming philosophy, but I still love Smash so I subscribed and I’ll be there, now and then)
Cool, I'll definitely subscribe. Sakurai is one of my personal heroes, next to Miyamoto and the late Satoru Iwata
@Pigeon After recently finishing Kirby Super Star 100% and also being a Smash fan, it's a bit more obvious what formula he has for making games.
I'd forgotten about the outliers Kid Icarus and Kirby Air Ride.
I'd love to see him get the chance to go more out of the Smash Bros bubble. Seems like he's got a curse om him that forces him to only spend his life on that.
@Pillowpants We don't hear much from Miyamoto anymore. I have a dream that he would write a biography. That would be an amazing read.
Oh that's cool.
The timing is good.
Games are more and more about presentation and less about actual FUN.
Share that Nintendo magic Sakurai!
I wonder what the non-named games he's showing off are. In the Stop for Big Moments video, I can tell that the vertically scrolling shooter is almost certainly one of the 1940 games, but I can't tell what the horizontal psuedo-3D one is, and I'd like to try it out. Honestly, my only problem with this is that he doesn't list the games that he's showing footage from in the description. Otherwise, I absolutely adore this. Plus, when he does the small rapid fire showcase, I can tell that the horizontal one is R-Type, but I can't discern what the vertical one is.
Interesting. I'll definitely give it a watch. I'm always interested in game development topics. I've been watching Mark Brown for a good while now and I really like his newest series: Developing. I should get back into making games on my free time.
EDIT: I'm glad the English version is subbed and not dubbed. I hate it when they dub Directs and stuff.
@Clyde_Radcliffe I loved "Ask Iwata" and I'm really hoping we're either getting an autobiography from Miyamoto, or at least an authorized biography.
Lesson number one: Punish the players by making them feel the defeat hard!
T-Thanks for the advice Sakurai-Sama
Sakurai has such a fun personality! Instant sub!
I've never subscribed to a channel faster in my entire life. Brilliant idea and I can't wait to watch his videos!
Also, over 120k subs within a day wowzers 0_0
@StarPoint ? Why
Watched all three videos immediately. Almost not even worth saying, because of course they are given who's making them, but the videos are so professional-looking and informative. Love what I've seen so far, can't wait for more.
Love this! Can't wait to absorb this knowledge as time goes on!
Given his work ethic and dedication (which I've respected since Brawl), it cant be understated how invaluable it'll be that he's doing something like this. And for free, no less!
I also love that the comment sections for the 3 videos so far are also substantial and sincere, for the most part. Kinda just nice to see a place not immediately fall towards jokes, memes, game begging, and trolling like a certain bird app.
When he announced he was doing something new a few month ago, I thought it might be something about game-design! It will be wonderful to witness the wisdom of Sakurai-san.

Very cool. Subscribed immediately.

I'm excited for any old Kirby dev knowledge!"
"hit stop"?
That's amazing, but I'm surprised that Nintendo allows this. It's as if he is helping his rivalry.
@Mario500 sorry I may be remembering the term wrong but basically that pause after a hit, defeat, or loss.
Already 230K subs in a single day, my word.
@BetterThanVegas Watch him get copyrighted for using footage from a game he made. Or have Nintendo crack down on him. Give him the full Youtuber experience.
