It's no secret that we at Nintendo Life love Super Mario Galaxy. Since its release in 2007, we have played through this planet-hopping adventure several times with both Wii remote and Joy-Con (thanks to its re-release in Super Mario 3D All-Stars), but every day is a school day and we have just learnt that there is a specific control quirk that changes how high the plumber bros. can spin jump.
Yes, as showcased in a recent post by Twitter account @MarioBrothBlog, it turns out that both Mario and Luigi have preferences for which hand you should swing if you want to perform the highest possible spin jump — who knew?
As it turns out, Mario will perform a higher spin jump if you shake the Wii Remote or right Joy-Con instead of its counterpart, while Luigi will leap higher if you shake the Nunchuck or left Joy-Con. The difference is marginal, we'll admit, but there is a difference all the same. You can see the different max heights in the image from Supper Mario Broth below:
Now, we know what you're thinking: "But what about if I press X/Y on the 3D All-Stars version of the game? What height will Mario and Luigi jump to then?" Well, the Twitter account has that covered too. Replying to that very question, the account stated that "the button spin is mapped internally to a right Joy-Con spin". The more you know, eh?
Whether it's a reference to the brothers' dominant hands (which seem to chop and change depending on what game they are in) or a complete coincidence, it's good to know that getting a little bit of extra in-game height can be as easy as swapping which hand you are shaking.
Now, is it about time to relight the 'Mario Galaxy 2 on Switch' fires?
Did you know this obscure fact? Have you put it into practice yet? Let us know in the comments.

16 years of playing and I never noticed this
This is so random...Why program in this difference and not tell it to gamers?
Yeah Nintendo. Gamers want Galaxy 2 and you know it! What's the holdup?
Discovering minutia like this will have an impact on speedruns, as they can be used to reduce airtime or clear trickier jumps.
Yet another reason why Luigi is the best character.
Speedrunners already hatching terrible plots with this knowledge no doubt
@Pikachupwnage speedrunners almost certainly already knew this. Here's a video on it from eight years ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0p_ZwiNXuw
how dint i noticed this? i played Super Mario Galaxy for countless years and never noticed this.
I didn't even know you could shake the nunchuck to spin!
Pretty sure I already heard about this from a speedrunner before
I love learning something about a game many years later. Also, Nintendo clearly doesn’t care about Mario Galaxy 2.
Wow I can’t believe I didn’t notice this! I have played this game so much lol, you learn something new everyday.
@Snatcher I can believe you didn't notice it. Look how marginal the difference is. You'd have to have specifically tested each method to have detected this.
@gcunit True. It’s just I played this game so much you’d think I’d notice it at this point lol.
This is a neat little fact. I like it a lot.
It's stuff like this that gets Luigi labelled as sinister.
I read somewhere that the problem with galaxy 2 was yoshi tongue and pointing which limits being controlled by a joycon only rather than switch lite or normal controller apparently xx
I've completed Mario Galaxy 100% maybe...3 times? (albeit with Mario, not Luigi).
Not only did I not know this, but I didn't even know Mario could spin using the nunchuk.
Yep this is insanely cool.
...
Now get that Galaxy 2 on my switch.
Pushes up glasses Well AcTuALly, I've known about this the whole time.
But in all seriousness, it's a really neat detail that I'm glad is getting recognized.
I'm still thinking it's so weird that they made 3D All Stars a limited release. Can't see them release Galaxy 2 for that reason. That would mean you can get Galaxy 2 while part one is unavailable.
This is obvious if you look at their names. L for Luigi. R for Ramio.
Glad kept my wiiu, still have Galaxy 2 on it, and it plays so well
Land the groundwork for all the waggle moves in Odyssey being stronger than using the buttons instead, if I recall correctly waggling while rolling would make it go faster than pressing the button.
@TruthisRare
Are you talking about when you put in the wii disc into it? I thought they never released it for the wiiU
Yes, the original wii game.
@dragonslacker1. I do believe that’s a problem. I also believe that the level where you have to roll on a ball by holding the Wii more vertical is an issue.
I’ve only ever played galaxy 2 via emulation despite beating every other Mario game multiple times. I’ve only ever got into world 2 before being unable to progress due to these issues.
However I got a steam deck a few weeks ago and the Yoshi tongue thing works fine thanks to thanks to the right trackpad. So I’ve just got on to world three for the first ever time as I’m playing through it currently.
Now that you mention it, I played mario galaxy a few weeks ago and definitely thought shaking the nunchuck felt strange, now I know why
OhMyGod. I love information like this. It can sometimes make a big difference too.
Yep, learned about this not that long ago, obviously didn't know it was a thing when I played the games for the first time and never noticed it myself even later!
@Vriess Especially considering they have so many NPCs telling you about obvious controls instead of stuff like this...
@PersianZSR got some crazy news for you, you can play any wii game on wii u, in HD
why is mapped to right joycon though? once you get to luigi you have to play with joycons and shake the left one for max height? i’m sure it doesn’t matter but still
I honestly had no clue that this was a thing. Pretty cool to know though!
