I preordered early. I caved in to the hype, what can I say?

I have like eighty games in my backlog right now, but yeah I'll buy Thousand Year Door sooner or later. I need something else to add to the eternal backlog for the next three years.

@N00BiSH I am a slave to video game hype myself. True story: I preordered Elden Ring at gamestop back when it came out because of the hype, played 3 hours on day 1, realized almost immediately that it wasnt for me, and returned it the same day.

I really enjoyed everything about The Origami King except the battle system, but I never got around to playing TTYD back on Gamecube, so I’m pretty sure I wont be disappointed.

Already pre-ordered obviously! Not one to miss out on this great game! (saying this as someone who played the original)

My backlog dates back to the last millennium, so at this point I think I might be more "collector" than "gamer". No harm adding another to the shelf, right?

Even though I remember it being a good/very good game, I'm voting not interested. For me to purchase a remake it has to be a personal all time classic.

Day one, for sure. I've gushed endlessly about how this is my favorite game of all-time, and I can't wait to experience it all over again in stunning new visuals and on a handheld console. I'm admittedly not too keen on some of the dialogue changes--they may have tried to make it closer to the original Japanese text in some regards, which is respectable, but there are at least a handful of examples of what can only really be described as censorship. Jokes that "wouldn't fly today" but are part of the reason the game is so beloved; jokes that make you say, "they put THAT in a Mario game?"

It's like the "panty raid" scene from SpongeBob that was banned on Paramount+. No one watched that episode and felt like it was trying to teach kids to replicate their behavior. What made it funny was how out-of-pocket it was for SpongeBob and Patrick of all people to do something like that. Like when they get "hungover" on Goofy Goober sundaes.

Some of the changes to the script just seem a bit arbitrary and one-sided, too. Like, we have to cut Goombella getting catcalled by male Goombas because that's sexual harassment (even though she stands up for herself by throwing shade right back at them and then helping Mario beat them up), but it's okay to leave the multiple scenes in the game where Mario gets non-consensually kissed by several different women throughout the entire adventure? I just don't get it. Seems like a big double standard to me.

I'm still glad we're getting this game at all, but I am starting to see why they were trying so hard to play it safe with the Mario brand for so many years. When you're constantly making paper jokes about getting crinkled up and folded, you don't run the risk of offending anyone. But the problem is, those jokes aren't funny. You have to be willing to tow the line at least a little bit, because if you play it too safe, you've erased all the humor. And that's exactly what Nintendo did for many years in fear of alienating a portion of their audience with a joke that was too edgy.

This opens up a whole conversation about political correctness and the effect it's having on entertainment. There's been other news about the game that has come out today, which I fear will only cause further controversy and stroke the flames of an ongoing culture war. I miss when things used to not be so serious--when video games and the conversation around them could just be fun.

I'm so happy this remake exists, and I'm sure I'll still love my time with the game. But I do hope the script hasn't been too sanitized and that the integrity hasn't been compromised too heavily in one of the most well-written and humorous games I've ever played. And I hope sales won't be affected because the game finds itself in the unfortunate position of having to take a political stance whether it wants to or not, due to localization differences from 20 years ago. I do not envy the Nintendo Treehouse, knowing that whatever decision they made would upset some people.

In time, I hope we can all learn to laugh at ourselves again and not take life too seriously. The media we consume doesn't have to be a perfect reflection of our moral compass--of COURSE Bowser would call one of his minions fat and say that a silent princess has its perks; he's Bowser, he's a jerk! If you take away Bowser's meanness... he isn't Bowser anymore. If you take away Gaston's sexism, he isn't Gaston, and the plot of the movie would fall apart.

If we model our behavior off the characters in a chubby Italian yahoo game... well, we've already went horribly wrong somewhere, lol. If the jokes in this game warrant being changed, then we should by all means ban the likes of GTA, because how can you say that video games don't cause violence if you think they influence people's mindsets in other ways? Again, it's a double standard.

Regardless, Thursday can't get here fast enough. This game's script was perfect to begin with, and I'm hoping with bated breath that the writing will still live up to the legacy. But no matter what, it's better than nothing, and I'll always have my memories of the original. I don't think anything could stop me from buying this game, and if the writing in the next Paper Mario game is even at least HALF as good as this one, I'll be happy.

It comes out on the same day as my wife's birthday so I have had this pre-ordered for ages.
She loved it when it came out on the Cube and she will be absolutely rapt.

Still have my Cube copy in mint condition so it's worth a fair bit, it will be nice to play it again on Switch.

@Splatoon_Guy You're talking about one transgender character in the game. Nintendo made the new translation in line with the original Japanese release.
I thought "respecting the original artist" vision was a good thing, and "censorship" was a bad thing. Or did the goal posts get moved again? 😒

@Splatoon_Guy they didn't "add unnecessary politics" to it... The original Japanese game had it, the American version ommited it explicitly. This being relocated made adjustments to the dialogue to make it a more accurate adaptation. In that sense, the original translation unnecessarily made political omissions.

This new one does remove some things but it's more like very inappropriate cat calling or weird things that may be uncomfortable...

I’m pretty satisfied with the gamecube game but thinking it looks different enough that I may pick it up in a few years on sale. The game isn’t really a sacred cow for me so I don’t care either way.

@Not_Soos it's interesting that you compare things like cat calling, which is harassment, to a character having the right to self-determination and use the gender they are comfortable with.

I kinda get that it's this thing where even villains are likable and good, despite doing some things that are evidently wrong... But oh well, not sure if I have the time and energy to go down that rabbit hole

You bet your arse I am! It's the only game alongside One Piece Odyssey I've been hyped for this whole year. I love Paper Mario and Intelligent Systems, so this went straight to pre-order upon availability.

I'd need to look it up and see how it is. I've not seen any trailers or gameplay, so not sure if it's something I'd play.

I made an account to preorder the GameStop Canada slip cover; but I know the "preorder" wont arrive till next week, so I'm gonna buy a copy in the morning. I already knew I'd keep a copy sealed, this is my favorite piece of media. period. so meh

PS some Brit that preordered for the paper airplane needs to scan and upload it! (also the diorama, but it looks complicated to scan; I might try to scan the cover, but I dont wanna ruin it, and I know someone else will do a better job)

Its interesting but I am not so sure. I may get it one day but I want to see what Nintendo has to offer in their June Direct and what other games will be there (remastered and remakes and new games).

@Lxlxrxzx The only thing I said concerning Vivian was just that I hate it's another thing that's going to cause contention, which is unfortunate as it's a stellar game I think everyone should play. I wasn't really trying to directly compare the two scenarios. Mario experiencing what nowadays would constitute sexual assault--I do think a comparison is warranted there to the Goombella censorship, though.

I pre-ordered the Japanese version from Play-Asia because it was only $42 there + shipping + they had another import I wanted. So I probably won't receive it for another couple weeks, but I'm okay with that. I've got more than enough to keep me occupied.

I will be in NYC at the beginning of June, so instead of getting the game this weekend, I'll wait a bit to get the game from the Nintendo Store. Can't wait!

I enjoyed the original N64 Paper Mario, and I didn't like to Wii Paper Mario. Ever since then I haven't tried any other entry, guess it's about time!

I've always had complicated feelings about TTYD as someone who has the bold opinion of not even putting it in my Top 5 Mario RPGs, let alone #1, but I like it and always have, and most of the changes I've seen so far seem to be for the better so I just pre-ordered it this evening.

I got it pre-ordered from GeekAlliance and it says my order is ready to ship so hopefully I'll get to say that I'm playing TTYD this weekend like I'm sure almost everyone else will.

Nintendo has a knack for releasing my most anticipated games from them the day I leave for vacations/trips. Last year it was Mario Wonder and this year it’s Paper Mario.

My copy is preordered but it’ll be waiting for me to play the second I get home.

I never play the first game (didn't have gamecube back then) so I guess I'll get this after I'm done with mario rpg switch. I heard the game is censored so I'll just looks what is changed online, I hope it's only the bad guy speech (cat calling) that's changed.

As cool as the game is, I have played way too many RPGs as of late. I need a break, I might come around to this eventually, but I am more than satisfied playing my ludicrously long backlog until then.

Lots of stuff happening for me in the next few months, so it's waiting time for me. Looking forward to it in the future though!

@LadyCharlie With all due respect this is a kids game. Many of us grew up playing this as kids. I personally don’t think that certain content (Like trans abuse) should be in a game like this. I think fans can all agree that the more people who play this great game, the better. I honestly, I’m just glad that so many fans can unite on Thursday to play one of their favorite classics. Something like this hasn’t happened since Mario Kart 8 deluxe!

@LadyCharlie Whether it's erasing trans characters from Mario, or erasing pinups from Tomb Raider, censorship is always a bad thing.

It is extremely rare for me to get a game on Day 1 these days. Last times I did was....Trials of Mana in 2020 then Collection of Mana and Let's Go Pikachu before that. Before that, literally maybe Super Paper Mario, which I think was 2008? This? No question. Day 1 and digital.

No, I had the original game when it released and while I liked the style, I've just never been much of a fan of role-playing games, with the exception of 1st person games like Dungeon Master.

My kid cannot wait to play this one. She loves the Paper Mario series and started a second playthrough of the Origami King while waiting for TTYD to re-release.

I am glad that there are sensitive subjects in games, that's one of the points of art, to question and make wonder.
If people are ignorant/frustrated/dumb, let them be challenged/upset/revolted, that's also a way to grow.
Without individual growth, our societies will never improve alltogether.

I've never been keen on Paper Mario games. I know this one is deemed one of, if not the best. I think I'm just happy to play it on Gamecube one day.

I'm not actually keen on these remakes anyway. I feel like it's taking resource away from new games. NSO could have a Gamecube emulator in the near future and the original Gamecube game is perfectly fine to revisit.

This, Luigi's Mansion and Mario vs Donkey Kong - I just don't support this direction.

Yeah I've checked online and I see what this refers to. I think it's dumb that they changed a sexual harassment scene just because it's a sexual harassment scene. That's dumb. Apparently the trans girl is still trans so that's good as THIS would have been the real bad move there. And yeah I don't make a big deal of it apparently since I did not even really remember but it's true that it sort of qualifies as sensitive.

Anyway you're definitely right it's great that there are sensitive subjects in games and cartoons and it's part of how people grow, and more importantly kids.

I preordered it but, for some reason, Amazon says that it won't arrive until next week, which is dumb. But whatever... I can wait a bit longer. And sill have tons of games to play either way.

I would like to get it, but right now, I'm still working on games like Genshin Impact and Stellar Blade. Heck, I still have to beat Princess Peach: Showtime! The problem is, because I work most of the day (we're talking 10-hour shifts), I have very little time to actually game.

@Not_Soos Vivian being there and being trans is great. And it's great Nintendo acknowledged it. And, to be honest, I'm sure it was a controversial thing within Nintendo to allow it. Especially nowadays with all the hate towards trans people.

Although, I have to admit that it's weird the omissions people do with this sort of stuff.... Not for "political correctness" or whatever but because someone getting catcalled and beating up the ones that catcall her being removed seems more insulting to the people that dislike being catcalled than anything else. It has the same energy to me than the live action adaptation of Avatar removing Sokka being sexist. The original writing was about the character overcoming something unjust (or, in the case of Avatar, a flaw of a main character) and they removed that theme all toghether because "controversy".

Because, let's be real here, It was done not to be "respectful of the people that recieved catcalling or victims of sexism in the real world" or whatever but to avoid "controversy". And, in doing so, is kinda sending the opposite message they probably want to send.

It’s a “not interested” for me. I’ll stick with the far superior GameCube PAL version.

Other than just, "Never change anything ever," I struggle to even understand why anyone cares about the catcalling thing. They kept in Dupree doing it, the new dialogue is funnier, and it's a basically completely forgettable two second bit that doesn't impact anything. It's a giant pile of whatever.

It's a pass for me. I purchased this game when it originally came out and just couldn't get into it. I wanted to like it, but I couldn't force myself to keep playing.

Preordered a few months ago and looking forward to dropping by the store to pick it up tomorrow! I've heard so much about TTYD over the years, but never played it. So I'm quite curious to try it out, preferably with the kids around, as it looks like a story they'd enjoy.

I fell off of Origami King, but get the feeling that (based on what I've read about its RPG-style combat and progression and its "spicier" story), TTYD will keep me interested longer.

I still use GameFly, yes that mythical service of yore still exists. It is no mere myth.and it has saved me a ton of money over the years.

I ended up getting a brand new copy of Tears of the Kingdom for $35 US, taxes included.

It won't be long before I can do the same for Paper Mario.

Completed it on GC so won't be bothering to pick it up. To those who haven't played it yet, enjoy it's good fun!

Loved the original version. A little bit more bonus content or a reduced prime and I´d buy it immediately. So, I`ll pass. Great game!
